WE’VE TEAMED UP TO BRING YOU MORE OF THE STORIES YOU CARE ABOUT

Regardless of the definition of a recession, the economy is slowing. The good news is that employment remains strong. The Fed continues to fight inflation by raising the Fed Funds rate and reducing liquidity. Have we seen the worst of inflation? Is the Fed’s aggressive inflation fighting monetary policy going to continue to weaken the economy? Will employment remain strong in the face of all of these uncertainties? Remember that the stock market is a leading indicator attempting to predict economic conditions 6 to 12 months out. And stocks begin to move higher long before recessions end. Dear Haley, My fiancé and I are really hoping to sell our current home and buy a new one in the next couple of months after our wedding. Should we move forward with our plans or hold off? I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to purchase a home in a (possible) recession and we would love to hear your opinion.

Jessica C., The Woodlands

Dear Jessica, Great question! Ongoing inflation continues to cause confusion around whether we’re in a recession right now or headed towards one in the near future. In terms of how this applies to you, there are pros and cons to buying a house during a recession. Home prices, buyer demand and mortgage rates generally decrease during a recession, so this definitely creates advantages for homebuyers. However, every “deal” isn’t going to be a green light. This is one of many reasons why it’s important to have an honest, sharp agent to advise you on whether or not to “pass go”! So, should you and your fiancé buy a house this fall? It really depends on your finances and goals as a couple. If you have valid concerns around job stability and your collective savings aren’t in a strong place, then it might be a good idea to hold off. However, if your joint income is relatively stable and you plan to stay in your home for at least the next five years and gain equity by the time you sell, then I’d go for it. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please call me at 936.238.7122.

UPCOMING PROJECT Hwy. 242 widening between I-45 and FM 1488 The Texas Department of Transporta- tion has proposed widening Hwy. 242 from FM 1488 to I-45, adding an east- bound and westbound lane. It would also reduce the existing vegetated median by 20 feet, converting it to a raised median. Three detention basins would also be constructed along Hwy. 242, which would require an additional 21 acres of right of way. According to TxDOT, Hwy. 242 would consist of six 12-foot lanes with 10- foot shoulders under the proposed plan. A prerecorded presentation can be viewed at www.txdot.gov. According to The Woodlands Township, the project will require the township to develop a landscape plan for TxDOT to implement according to township standards as well an increase to street- scape maintenance costs. Timeline: TBD Cost: $40 million Funding sources: federal funds, TxDOT Widening is planned on Hwy. 242. VANESSA HOLTCOMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER
