Kuykendahl Road pathway gets board approval

Residents have raised concerns about the area, citing pedestrian safety and children needing to cross the street to get to Tomball ISD schools in the Creekside Park area. Kristin Thomas, a teacher at Creekside Park Junior High School, spoke about a child in her class who witnessed his friend get hit by a car in November. “As I tried to console him, my heart was breaking for the lasting images his mind would soon not erase. He could not function and wasn’t productive for the remainder of the class. ... I wondered how in the world he got back on his bike the next day and all the days that followed,” Thomas said. Leftover funding for crossing guards for fiscal year 2021-22 will be used to fund the items for FY 2022-23. “Without the crossing guards, many students in my community would have to be braver than they should have to be,” Thomas said. “My students’ bravery should be reserved for standing up to bullies, for making speeches in class, for being bold enough to do the right thing.” Funding leftover from the crossing guard funds will go toward the path, which is pro- jected to cost $443,700 and will run alongside Kuykendahl for 4,000 feet from Timarron Drive to Creekside Forest Drive.

Planned drainage and flooding improvements will occur near The Woodlands High School and neighborhoods in its vicinity. $11.3M CITY HIGHLIGHTS OAK RIDGE NORTH The Oak Ridge North City Council unanimously approved a proposed property tax rate for fiscal year 2022-23 of $0.4248 per $100 valuation at an Aug. 8 special meeting. The proposed tax rate is a no-new-revenue rate, according to City Manager Heather Neeley. The FY 2022-23 budget and tax rate will be on the Aug. 22 agenda for approval. HARRIS COUNTY Harris County commissioners voted 3-2 to prepare a $1.2 billion bond during their Aug. 2 meeting but will still need to call a future special session to formally place the bond on the November ballot. Each precinct would receive a minimum of $220 million, while $100 million would be reserved for public safety facilities. “WITHOUT THE CROSSING GUARDS, MANY STUDENTS IN MY COMMUNITY WOULD HAVE TO BE BRAVER THAN THEY SHOULD HAVE TO BE.” KRISTIN THOMAS, CREEKSIDE PARK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER, REGARDING KUYKENDAHL ROAD SAFETY

Initial projections indicated about 135 riders per day were expected, but as of June, the program had an average of 33 riders per day, accord- ing to Ruthanne Haut, the township’s director of transportation. Board Vice Chair Bruce Rieser said it was worth continuing the commitment through the end of the year to see if ridership improves. The four members of the board of directors voted to continue the program and reduce service to eight hours a day, approving a fiscal year 2022 budget amendment of $16,295 and revising the proposed FY 2023 budget to reflect lower use levels.

THE WOODLANDS A pilot program for a park and ride route to the Energy Corridor District has not attracted the projected ridership six months into the program that launched in January, according to The Woodlands Township officials. The program is 80% funded through a Congestion Management and Air Quality grant from the Hous- ton-Galveston Area Council, and the township and the Energy Corridor District share funding for the remaining 20%, or $60,583 for the township’s share annually, according to township information.
