Dear Haley, My fiancé and I are really hoping to sell our current home and buy a new one in the next couple of months after our wedding. Should we move forward with our plans or hold off? I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to purchase a home in a (possible) recession and we would love to hear your opinion.

Jessica C., The Woodlands

Dear Jessica, Great question! Ongoing inflation continues to cause confusion around whether we’re in a recession right now or headed towards one in the near future. In terms of how this applies to you, there are pros and cons to buying a house during a recession. Home prices, buyer demand and mortgage rates generally decrease during a recession, so this definitely creates advantages for homebuyers. However, every “deal” isn’t going to be a green light. This is one of many reasons why it’s important to have an honest, sharp agent to advise you on whether or not to “pass go”! So, should you and your fiancé buy a house this fall? It really depends on your finances and goals as a couple. If you have valid concerns around job stability and your collective savings aren’t in a strong place, then it might be a good idea to hold off. However, if your joint income is relatively stable and you plan to stay in your home for at least the next five years and gain equity by the time you sell, then I’d go for it. I hope this helps.
