Pugerville ISD considers cost-cutting scenarios to solve budget woes
BY BRITTANY ANDERSON
As Pugerville ISD faces a projected $18.3 million budget shortfall in 2026-27, district ocials are looking at ways to reduce current and future shortfalls by optimizing operations. PfISD partnered with education consulting agency Civic Solutions Group last fall to create individual campus proles, which were used to form 12 draft optimization scenarios. The scenarios span from closing campuses to rezoning students, repurposing vacant facilities and implementing new school program models. “With the proposals that have been presented and the projected cost savings, that’s going to allow us to be able to get a plan in place to make sure that the budget is where it needs to be,” Chief Financial Ocer Jennifer Land said.

WilCo ocials reassess voting procedures At a March 24 meeting, Williamson County ocials, party leaders, and voters unpacked what went wrong on election day for the March primary and detailed the changes residents can expect when they return to the polls. What happened With the shift to precinct-level voting for the March 3 primary election, the county had to equip a larger number of polling locations on a shorter timeline. Additionally, both parties struggled to fully sta these locations, Williamson County Elections Administrator Bridgette Escobedo said. Many voters arrived at the wrong location, drove to multiple sites and faced wait times of up to two to three hours, according to accounts from voters. What’s next Both parties have agreed to return to countywide
Hutto delays Prairie Winds funding plan Hutto City Council extended a public hearing for a proposed assessment tied to Improvement Area No. 2 of the Prairie Winds Public Improvement District. The public hearing will continue during the next council meeting April 16. What we know The improvement area spans about 62 acres near CR 133 in Hutto, with plans for 192 single-family homes. The PID would help fund projects such as roads, sidewalks, and water and wastewater lines. The estimated cost of improvements is $10.9 million. Delayed action comes after ocials heard reports that buyers and Real- tors are struggling to obtain documents that explain what PID assessments are and the available payo options for homeowners.

voting for the upcoming primary runo May 26. Voters will be able to vote at any Williamson County polling location, and both parties have agreed to share locations to reduce confusion and share resources. However, the parties will not run a joint election, meaning voters will use two separate lines and check-ins. The Democratic Party will continue to oer electronic ballot marking devices, or BMDs. The Republican party plans to primarily utilize ballot-on-demand printers for hand-marked paper ballots, which will then be fed into scanners.

Pflugerville Fire Department Highlights 2025 Year-In-Review Travis County ESD No. 2 releases annual report, shares major outcomes from last year
New Facilities The brand new Ron G. Moellenberg training facility, located on Cameron Road, replaced TCESD2's previous training facility that hadn't been updated in 30 years. Having a dedicated training center helps the Department keep up with strict annual training and certification requirements.
Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 (TCESD2), has an- nounced the release of their 2025 annual report. The report serves as a central piece of communication from the Fire Department to the residents who live within the boundaries of the district. “It’s important for us to maintain fully transparent communications with the community,” said Chief Nicholas Perkins. “This year’s report does a great job of showing our residents how we continue to invest in their safety.” Services Calls Overall, TCESD2 recorded 14,389 total service calls in 2025. This is the highest number of service calls in one year that the Depart-
ment has ever recorded. That number includes: ● 10,774 medical emergency calls ● 346 fire emergency calls To see a more thorough breakdown of fire and medical service calls visit www.pflugervillefire.org/annual-report f ires

Installing Free, Lifesaving Smoke Alarms Thanks to a 2025 FEMA grant, TCESD2 received enough fund- ing to install over 2,300 free smoke alarms, benefitting over 2,000 at-risk residents in their District, at no cost to the taxpay- ers. Smoke alarms are critical early-warning systems that greatly reduce the risk of death in a fire emergency.

Water supply stable amid repairs
What else?
A key turning point came in early March, when city ocials discovered Lake Pugerville held signicantly less water than previously believed, prompting an immediate escalation in restrictions. Public Utilities Director Matt Rector said the city had been relying on electronic sensors that estimate lake depth, which indicated the lake was around 28 feet deep. However, a diver inspection found that the readings were o by about 11 feet. City sta said they have not identied a clear cause for the inaccurate readings, but the system has since been recalibrated. As of April 6, Lake Pugerville remains below its desired level, and ocials are working toward a target elevation of 633 feet—the threshold for easing Stage 3 restrictions. Continued conservation will determine when Pugerville can return to normal operations, city leaders said.
City ocials said Pugerville’s water system is stabilizing, but remains under strain as crews work toward permanent repairs following multiple breaks in the pipeline from the Colorado River into Lake Pugerville. While a temporary bypass has restored partial ow, ocials said full repairs are still weeks away. Materials to replace roughly 400- 500 feet of damaged pipeline are expected to arrive by mid-to-late April. Once on site, contractors will plan a coordinated shutdown in late May to complete repairs and reconnect the system. Rather than stagger multiple outages, the city is aligning work across contractors into a single shutdown expected to last about two weeks. The repairs will replace all sections of pipe where failures occurred, though ocials said replacing the entire 15-mile pipeline is not being considered due to cost and feasibility.

Proposed data center seeks wastewater services from Hutto Developer Iron Mountain is planning a data center complex in Central Texas, and seeking a deal with the city of Hutto for wastewater services. What we know The approximately 500-acre site on CR 404 is in Taylor’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, but the project is not in a sewer service territory. The property was previously approved for what was called the Taylor Meadows Development, a residential project that had an existing wastewater service agreement with the city of Hutto. Seven data center buildings are expected to use about 30,200 gallons per day for sanitary sewer, according to Iron Mountain. “That’s significantly less than the portion of the development that would have been residential as

Travis County unveils 10- year parks plan with 35 recommended projects Travis County is one step closer to launching a 10-year plan to expand its parks system. County staff presented a final draft plan to expand county park access over the next decade at a Travis County Commissioners Court meeting March 10. The effort comes after voters approved a $276.44 million parks bond proposition in 2023. The big picture Overall, the Travis County Parks department has developed a list of 35 recommended projects. Projects have a range of completion dates projected in the short, mid and long-term. The county aims to acquire land for the Wilbarger Creek Greenway and Gilleland Creek Greenway in the northeastern area. The plan includes building trails and amenities along the Gilleland Creek

perspective focused on long-term outcomes, not short-term reactions.
What do you see as the greatest challenge facing Hutto, and how will you address it? Managing rapid growth is Hutto’s biggest challenge. If not planned properly, it strains roads, water, and services. I will focus on long-term planning, coordination with Hutto ISD, developers, and infrastructure partners, Infrastructure, ISD, and business relationships. All have one deceptively simple solution: forward thinking leadership willing to take the blame but sharing the successes.
