Lamar CISD approves rezoning options for new Fulshear schools In preparation for the opening of Williams High, Urbanski Junior High and Dresner Middle schools for the 2027-28 school year, Lamar CISD’s board of trustees approved rezoning options for the new Fulshear secondary schools at its May 19 meeting. The specifics Jonathan Maxwell, executive director of enroll- ment management for LCISD, shared enrollment projections and three rezoning options for each

Schools to offer free summer lunches Katy and Lamar Consolidated ISDs will offer free breakfast and lunch this summer. What you need to know Katy ISD residents will be able to visit six locations from late May to the end of July, while Lamar CISD residents can visit nine locations from early June to mid-July. The sites will be open Mondays through Thursdays and will be closed on Fridays. school with the board. However, the attendance boundary committee gave their final recommendation of a committee-de- vised, administration-endorsed fourth option. The committee was comprised of parents and stakehold- ers of surrounding affected schools. Committee representatives said the fourth option was created to minimize splitting track patterns and prioritize balanced enrollment across campuses to support LCISD’s growth. Also of note The board also voted to allow rising high school seniors to stay at their current campus instead of transferring for the 2027-28 school year. Students can also apply for a University Inter- scholastic League legacy provision to stay at their current campus if they meet certain criteria.

Katy ISD faces $15.27M bus seat belt installation cost Katy ISD will see a $15.27 million cost to install three-point seat belts to all school buses that do not have them, Executive Director of Transporta- tion Paul Landis said at a May 11 board of trustees meeting. The report—which the district will share with Katy ISD bus seat belt breakdown

LCISD’s property value growth expected to increase Lamar CISD officials announced proposed property values had increased from 3% to 4.5% at a May 19 meeting. The announce- ment came after officials said in April that the school district would go into the 2026-27 school year with a balanced budget. Additionally, the 2026-27 school year’s total revenue is estimated to be $572.2 million, a nearly $10 million increase from what was provided last month. Also of note Chief Financial Officer Greg Buchanan said officials are considering two potential tax rates for the 2026-27 school year: $1.1351 and $1.1451 per $100 valuation, with the average home value at $424,065.

the Texas Education Agency—comes after lawmak- ers approved Texas Senate Bill 546 in 2025, which requires school districts to assess how many of their buses have three-point seat belts and the cost to install them. The details Landis reported every bus bought since 2018 has three-point seat belts, although 552—or 65.7%—of the 840 buses Katy ISD operates or contracts are not outfitted with them. The estimated cost to refit conventional pas- senger buses is $40,673, while the cost for special education buses is $15,907, per agenda documents. “Given current and projected budget

Little Italy combines ne dining with home comfort When husband-and-wife restaurateurs Christina Mojica and Chef Alfredo Mojica opened Little Italy in Katy in late 2024, it was more than just another restaurant debut. Other signature oerings include handmade pastas featuring slow-braised lamb or seafood such as shrimp, clams, scallops and calamari, as well as

black true risotto topped with Parmesan. “We are a family-owned, husband-and-wife team where Chef Alfredo brings over 30 years of experience creating authentic Italian cuisine with care and intention,” Christina Mojica said. “It starts with the oven and recipes that don’t cut corners. But honestly, it’s the feeling. You walk in and it just feels warm and familiar.” Extra oerings Beyond dinner service, Little Italy has expanded into an experience-driven destination. Weekend brunch features live music alongside dishes such as lobster and waes with hot honey, lemon ricotta pancakes and focaccia eggs Benedict. Guests can also participate in Handmade Pizza Classes led by Chef Alfredo, where attendees learn dough preparation, sauce-making and wood-red baking techniques. Why they do it Still, despite the vast menu and entertainment oerings, the owners say the restaurant’s mission remains simple. “We want people to feel full—not just from the food, but from the whole experience,” Christina Mojica said. “If you leave feeling like you just had dinner at a friend’s house, we did our job.”

For the team behind Houston’s Amore Italian Restaurant, the concept marked the next step in bringing their signature blend of hospitality, tradition and family-centered dining to a new audience through an elevated yet approachable Italian experience. “We opened in late 2024, and what a ride it’s been since day one,” Christina Mojica said. “We wanted to bring the same heart, the same recipes, the same Chef Alfredo magic—but in a way that felt like Sunday dinner at someone’s house. Katy felt like the perfect t.” That philosophy shapes every aspect of Little Italy, from its welcoming atmosphere to the menu. Designed as a neighborhood-focused restaurant, it combines ne-dining techniques with the comfort of a home kitchen. Wood-red aromas, shared plates and top-notch service are just as central to the experience as the food itself. The menu The restaurant’s open kitchen is anchored by a gold-tiled wood-burning oven used to prepare all 12 varieties of pizza. The menu also highlights authentic Italian comfort food, including seafood and steak entrées.

Owners said the restaurant aims to feel like dinner at home.

Fort Bend County is undergoing its first air quality study analysis to determine how air pollution varies across the county. What residents need to know Fort Bend County Health and Human Services partnered with The University of Texas at Austin and UTHealth Houston School of Public Health to conduct a three-week study to measure the county’s air quality at a neighborhood level. The $100,000 study aims to support county public health initiatives by providing a baseline assessment to guide future air quality solutions, officials said in an April 7 news release. Fort Bend County undergoing 1st air quality study

How it works Daniel Sung, a Ph.D. student at The University of Texas at Austin, said the study is a mixture of stationary and mobile monitoring over a three-week period, which was completed this spring. The van contained a computer monitor and a Vocus mass spectrometer, a real-time monitoring system, capable of measuring more than 1,000 air pollutants, per the release. Officials will look at variables such as time of day, day of the week, temperature as well as both indoor/outdoor air pollution while tracking pollut- ants, including ozone, fine particulate matter, nitro- gen oxides and carbon monoxide, among others. The background Dr. Letosha Gale-Lowe, local health authority and Fort Bend County health and human services director, said the study came after a resident shared air quality concerns as the county continues to grow. “We need to understand how air pollution varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, and by using advanced mobile air monitoring equipment to identify pollution hotspots, we are gathering high

Air pollution and your health What is air pollution?

Air pollution is a mix of hazardous substances from both human-made sources like vehicle emissions and natural gas heating, as well as natural sources such as wildfire smoke. How does air pollution affect your health? Air pollution exposure is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in human cells, which may lay a foundation for chronic diseases and cancer. Who is affected by air pollution? Air pollution affects everyone’s health, but certain groups may be harmed more. Almost nine out of 10 people who live in urban areas worldwide are affected by air pollution.

resolution data that’s necessary to make informed, data-driven decisions,” Gale-Lowe said. Next steps Data analysis is underway with a final report expected in mid-2026.
