Missouri City to consider calling November bond
FOR 55+ ACTIVE ADULTS IN HOUSTON, TX
The bond package could include several key project proposals for mobility/street reconstruction, utilities, parks, facilities and public safety with several levels of impact, Director of Public Works Mustafa Albassam said.
Missouri City voters could see a special bond election on November ballots after City Council directed staff May 18 to move forward with developing a potential five-year capital improvement bond program.
The balanced community investment program proposes a more comprehensive long-term strategy with moderate financial impact addressing city needs such as: • Transportation and mobility • Parks and recreation • Public safety and facility expansion The core infrastructure program proposes a conservative approach with lower financial impact by encompassing critical infrastructure and essential needs to address the highest priority needs, including: • Street rehabilitation/reconstruction • Critical utility infrastructure • Safety-related transportation improvements The comprehensive and transformational program would represent a long-term investment to position the city for future growth, including: • Major transportation improvements • Parks and recreational facilities • Public safety and facility expansion • Economic development supporting infrastructure

NOAA ocials predict less active hurricane season in 2026
With hurricane season underway through Nov. 30, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin- istration ocials are predicting the rst below-aver- age Atlantic hurricane season since 2015. What you need to know The latest NOAA forecasts are expecting residents along the Atlantic Ocean to see a less active hurri- cane season than normal, with a 55% chance of a below-normal season, NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs said at a May 21 news conference. Jacobs said this is due to an expected El Nino as well as slightly warmer ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and weaker trade winds, which support fewer tropical storms and hurricane development. According to predictions, NOAA ocials are forecasting a range of eight to 14 named storms in the Atlantic Ocean with winds of 39 mph or higher, including: • Three to six hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher
• One to three major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher What’s new? The NOAA’s National Hurricane Center is set to implement an improved version of the tropical cyclone graphic this season to include watches and warnings for inland areas, ocials said. Staying prepared Although the season is predicted to be below average, National Weather Service Director Ken Graham said it’s important to remember it only takes one storm to make it a bad season. “Although El Nino’s impact in the Atlantic Basin can often suppress hurricane development, there is still uncertainty in how each season will unfold,” Graham said. “Preparing now for hurricane season— and not waiting for a storm to threaten—is essential for staying ahead of any storm.”

Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center celebrates 10 years
Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, a special project of the Children’s Museum Hous- ton, celebrated its 10th anniversary of serving families in Sugar Land. Henry Yau, who serves as vice president of public relations for the Children’s Museum Houston, said the museum ran a market run with a satellite location in Sugar Land Town Square during the summers of 2007 and 2008, which was met with great success and solid- ied the decision to fundraiser to expand to Fort Bend County. The movement was advocated for by Charlene Pate, a Sugar Land resident and lifetime board member, who saw the need to expand in the Fort Bend County area as the child population grew exponentially. “What began as a bold vision a decade ago has grown into a vibrant community treasure shaped by the laughter, imagination and curiosity of the children and families we serve every day,” CEO Rayanne Darensbourg said. What they offer The center, which is located at the historic Imperial Sugar renery site, serves families with children from birth to age 12 and features three permanent galleries including: • Kidtropolis USA, where kids can learn how to run a city featuring real life Fort Bend County business building such as Fort Bend Christian Academy and HEB • How does it work gallery, where kids can learn
The center has served nearly 900,000 visitors since its debut in Fort Bend County.

The museum also features two rotating galler- ies—cultural and what’s new—which are changed every 18 months, Yau said. Beyond its galleries, the museum also oers changing weekly events to ensure children can stay engaged, Yau said. “This is something the community wanted and it’s very important for families in Fort Bend to support children,” Yau said. “Children really the future … it’s very important because these are the next engineers, the next scientists and the next problem solvers and it’s very important that we support that in our own community out in Fort Bend.”
The center oers three permanent galleries as well as two additional galleries that change every 18 months.
The grand opening was held Memorial Day weekend in 2016.

Fort Bend County greenlights TxDOT authority for Grand Parkway expansion
Grand Parkway expansion The new expansion in Fort Bend County aims to improve commute times for residents in Sugar Land, Richmond, Rosenberg and beyond.

Proposed future segments
Grand Parkway is set to see more expansions through Fort Bend and Brazoria counties. What happened? At a May 14 meeting, Fort Bend County com- missioners voted to give the Texas Department of Transportation primacy on Segments C1 and C2 , as well as the unbuilt portion of Segment D of the Grand Parkway project. The vote allows TxDOT to be the primary contact responsible for construction and operation on the 26-mile extension from south Sugar Land to Hwy. 288 near Rosharon, Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers said in a May 19 Facebook post. The expansion, which is a part of the proposed 180-mile highway that circles the Greater Houston area, comes at no cost to the county.
SOURCE: TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION/COMMUNITY IMPACT
In their own words Interim County Judge Daniel Wong said the expansion is vital to the continued growth of the county, which is expected to reach over 1 million residents by 2030. “One of the most important services we can pro- vide for Fort Bend County families is our focus on improving the infrastructure of the county,” Wong said in a May 18 news release. “I look forward to continuing this work and making the journey from A to B as quick, enjoyable and safe as possible.” Looking ahead Fort Bend County will retain primacy of the seg- ment between Westpark Tollway and Hwy. 90A, and expects to begin construction on additional lanes later this year, Precinct 4 Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy said in a May 18 news release.

Fort Bend County is undergoing its rst air quality study to determine how air pollution varies across the county. What residents need to know Fort Bend County Health and Human Services have partnered with The University of Texas at Austin and UTHealth Houston School of Public Health to conduct a three-week study to measure the county’s air quality at a neighborhood level. The $100,000 study aims to support county public health initiatives by providing a baseline assessment to guide future air quality solutions, ocials said in an April 7 news release. Fort Bend County undergoing 1st air quality study
How it works Daniel Sung, a Ph.D. student at The University of Texas at Austin, said the study is a mixture of stationary and mobile monitoring over a three-week period, which was completed this spring. The van contained a computer monitor and a Vocus mass spectrometer, a real-time monitoring system, capable of measuring more than 1,000 air pollutants, per the release. Ocials will look at variables such as time of day, day of the week, temperature as well as both indoor/ outdoor air pollution while tracking pollutants, including ozone, ne particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, among others. The background Dr. Letosha Gale-Lowe, local health authority and Fort Bend County health and human services director, said the study came after a resident shared air quality concerns as the county continues to grow. “We need to understand how air pollution varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, and by using advanced mobile air monitoring equipment to identify pollution hotspots, we are gathering high
