ABOUT US

Owners John and Jennifer Garrett launched the rst edition of Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 with three full-time employees covering Round Rock and Pugerville, Texas. We have expanded our operations to include hundreds of employees, our own printing operation and over 30 hyperlocal editions across three states. Our circulation is over 2 million residential mailboxes, and it grows each month with new residents and developments.

HIGHLIGHTS FROMTHISMONTH

FROMANA: Happy New Year! The January issue is always my favorite. There is something so exciting about looking forward to what will be the biggest stories of the year in transportation, business, real estate and more. What are you looking forward to this year? Any stories you are hoping we cover? Send them my way and we will look into them. Ana Erwin, GENERALMANAGER

Community Impact Newspaper teams include general managers, editors, reporters, graphic designers, sales account executives and sales support, all immersed and invested in the communities they serve. Our mission is to build communities of informed citizens and thriving businesses through the collaboration of a passionate team. Our core values are Faith, Passion, Quality, Innovation and Integrity.

FROMSTEVEN: Our cover story this month takes a look at how Grapevine Mills—in spite of trends working against malls nationwide—is keeping foot trac strong, in part by nding tenants that provide entertainment and experiential options for guests. The implications for the mall’s other businesses, and the surrounding areas in Grapevine, are signicant. We hope you’ll give that story a read—and Happy New Year! Steven Ryzewski, EDITOR

Our purpose is to be a light for our readers, customers, partners and each other.

Board of trustees approves 202223 instructional calendar

Carroll ISD employees now prohibited from secretly recording meetings Carroll ISD trustees approved an amendment to district policy prohibiting employees from secretly recording certain district meetings in a unanimous vote Dec. 13. First proposed in November, the amendment further claries when it is acceptable for sta to make an audio or visual recording of a meeting. Gordon Butler, assistant superintendent of student and sta services, described the procedure as a notication provision. “What we’re saying is, you can record— but you just have to tell us that you’re recording,” Butler said. The new language, which goes into eect in the 2022-23 school year, will not aect recordings involving authorized investigations conducted by district personnel or usually recorded meetings, such as board meetings or grievance hearings. Butler said several other districts in the area have similar policies or similar language in their employee handbook, including Dallas ISD.

BY BAILEY LEWIS GRAPEVINECOLLEYVILLE ISD Trustees approved the school district’s 2022-23 instructional calendar at their Dec. 13 regular meeting. Among the noteworthy changes to the adopted schedule is winter break for the 2022-23 school year, which will take place from Dec. 21 to Jan. 9, according to the calendar. In comparison to the 2021-22 calendar, which had its winter break from Dec. 20 to Jan. 4, the 2022-23 winter break—including weekends—will be four days longer. Instructional calendar drafts were reviewed by the District Excellence Committee on Nov. 11, and two were reviewed and received input from campus leadership teams, according to district documents. Lance Groppel, GCISD executive director of instructional leadership, said a community survey sent out to help the district received over 1,800 responses. The results showed that 61.4% were in favor of calendar Option B—the approved calendar—and 38.6% were in favor of Option A, which had a winter break more similar to the 2021-22 school year. However, both spring break and Thanksgiving break will last for ve days, which is the same length as both breaks for 2021-22, according to the calendar. The 2022-23 spring

Updated CarillonParc plan gets green light fromSouthlake council In a unanimous vote Dec. 7, Southlake City Council approved the second and nal reading for the newly updated plans for Carillon Parc. A groundbreaking is planned this summer. BY SANDRA SADEK

Following four years of discussions between the city and the developer and several modications to the site plan, council members approved an updated plan that includes 79 residential lots and sets aside land for a potential library, if the city should decide to place it there. The new library, initially planned to be built as one of the many amenities inside the mixed-use development, was removed from the nal plan Nov. 16 with city ocials citing the need to review responses from a citywide survey on library needs submitted this summer. The project, which will break ground this sum- mer, will start Phase 1 with a $3.5 million-$4 million investment from the developers to construct site infrastructure—roadways and utilities. Those must be completed before the 79 residential lots can be released. John Terrell, one of the developers of the project

TARRANT COUNTY The Commissioners Court established a sexual assault response team Dec. 13. According to county documents, the SART will bring agencies together that serve sexual assault victims and formalize guidelines involving victims’ needs, account- ability and public safety. According to Kim D’Avignon, chief prosecutor on the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Oce’s adult sexual response team, the county has actually had a SART since 1989. COLLEYVILLE City Council dis- cussed trash-removal service options Jan. 4 as the city’s contract with Community Waste Disposal ends Oct. 31, according to city documents. Residents have seen an increase in monthly trash and recycling rates, from $12.63 in 2017 to $16.14 as of Nov. 1, 2021. Assistant City Manager Adrienne Lothery told the council that the rate is likely to increase again this year due to labor shortages and landll fees, among other factors. Lothery said the city could renew the contract with Community Waste Disposal as it stands now, negotiate dierent terms with the company for the next contract or post a request for proposals to allow others to bid.
