Tarrant County sees record rate of positive COVID-19 tests, case spike Tarrant County is in the midst of a spike in COVID-19 cases as well as the highest positivity rate in testing that the county has seen to date. Vinny Taneja, Tarrant County Public Health director, detailed the latest data for county commissioners Jan. 4, noting the seven-day average of positive COVID-19 tests is up to 35.31% as of Jan. 1. The previous high mark, set Jan. 6, 2021, had been an average of 31.18%. “We’re testing hundreds and thousands of people every day on dierent sites, [and] one in three are coming back positive—that’s bad news for all of us,” Taneja said. For the week ending Jan. 1, Tarrant County’s COVID-19 dashboard reected 10,386 new cases—the highest one-week total since the county recorded 11,188 new cases for the week ending Sept. 18. Taneja also noted an uptick in conrmed COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tarrant County— up to 792 as of Jan. 4, a more than tripling of the 245 conrmed COVID-19 hospitalizations recorded two weeks prior Dec. 21.

TARRANT COUNTY The Commissioners Court established a sexual assault response team Dec. 13. According to county documents, the SART will bring agencies together that serve sexual assault victims and formalize guidelines involving victims’ needs, account- ability and public safety. According to Kim D’Avignon, chief prosecutor on the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Oce’s adult sexual response team, the county has actually had a SART since 1989. However, Senate Bill 476—passed in 2021—mandated a formal action establishing a committee by all Texas counties. COLLEYVILLE City Council dis- cussed trash-removal service options Jan. 4 as the city’s contract with Community Waste Disposal ends Oct. 31, according to city documents. Residents have seen an increase in monthly trash and recycling rates, from $12.63 in 2017 to $16.14 as of Nov. 1, 2021. Assistant City Manager Adrienne Lothery told the council that the rate is likely to increase again this year due to labor shortages and landll fees, among other factors. Lothery said the city could renew the contract with Community Waste Disposal as it stands now, negotiate dierent terms with the company for the next contract or post a request for proposals to allow others to bid.
