Health Care Edition

2026

Welcome to Community Impact’s 2026 Health care Guide! While we have reported recently on population growth in the Spring and Klein communities, this year’s health care edition takes a look at how local health care providers are meeting the need and expanding services across the area. In this edition we take a look at Houston Methodist’s rst full year of a new OB-GYN residency program to help expand care to northwest Houston. At the same time, St. Luke’s Health is working to bring a new $34 million free-standing inpatient rehabilitation facility in partnership with Lifepoint Rehabilitation. Be sure to also check out the latest news on all of the hospitals serving the area, including specialty surgery hospital TOPS announcing a new location and the 10-year anniversary of St. Luke’s Health in Vintage Park.

Harris County Public Health exploring local cancer rates

New countywide data that breaks down cancer cases at the census tract level is helping to inform the way providers care for patients in the Spring area, local health care ocials said. How it works In March, Harris County Public Health released the East Harris County Cancer Assessment Report, which focused on 66 census tracts in East Harris County. Along with the report, HCPH launched an interactive dashboard where residents can see where higher-than-expected rates exist for 17 types of cancer countywide. “Higher-than-expected cancer rates exist across all of Harris County compared to the state of Texas,” said Dr. Jo Ann Monroy, senior manager of Data Analytics and Reporting for the Oce of Epi- demiology, Surveillance and Emerging Diseases, or OESED. “By identifying where certain cancer types occur at higher-than-expected rates, clinicians can better understand the communities they

serve, tailor prevention and screening eorts, and consider environmental or demographic factors that may inuence patient risk.” In the Spring and Klein areas, data shows several census tracts exhibited higher-than-expected can- cer rates for bladder, brain, lymphoma, prostate, skin and thyroid cancers. Diving in deeper While the report acknowledges environmental concerns, Monroy noted it does not determine causation and more research is needed. “Continued air and water-quality monitoring, enforcement of existing environmental regula- tions and ongoing remediation of contaminated sites all play a signicant role in lowering risk over time,” Monroy said. Moving forward, Monroy said HCPH and the OESED plan to obtain additional data from the Texas Cancer Registry as new data is released to further enhance their analysis.

Standardized Incidence Ratios, or SIRs, were calculated using data from the Texas Cancer Registry from 2010- 20 and required at least 11 cases per census tract. Higher-than-expected cancer rates Types of cancer prominent in Spring, Klein

Most doctors agree no day at the hospital is guaranteed to look the same. For medical resi- dents, unpredictability can bring the best learning opportunities. July 1 marks the one-year anniversary of Hous- ton Methodist Willowbrook Hospital’s OBGYN residency, the hospital’s rst and only graduate medical education residency. Houston Methodist Willowbrook launched the four-year program in part to expand access to OBGYN care in northwest Houston, Program Director Dr. Sarah Hoopes said. Read all about it Drs. Katie Kolp and Christine Jeong, two residents in the inaugural ve-person cohort of the program, said they love how the hands-on training teaches them to roll with the punches. Depending on their rotation, a day may be spent assisting with patient check-ups in the clinic, newborn deliveries or surgical procedures in the operating room. In an interview with Community Impact , the residents said being a part of a new program helped boost camaraderie within their small cohort and gain condence with making decisions under pressure. “We learned how to be residents while also helping shape what the program would become, and without senior residents or an established structure, we had to step into leadership and Doctors reect on 1st year of Willowbrook OBGYN residency

Hoopes said northwest Houston needs more OBGYNs to best serve its growing population. Most of their patients come from the Spring, Cypress and Tomball communities, but many also travel from more rural areas that lack health care providers, she said. Looking forward Houston Methodist Willowbrook will welcome a new ve-person cohort of residents in July, faculty said. Faculty member Dr. Stacy Norton said they will continue to adjust the program’s curriculum and rotations as it grows to four full cohorts of doctors as well as expand the hospital’s academic culture.

responsibility early,” Jeong said. Hoopes said one that sets the program apart from other teaching hospitals is its emphasis on continuity of care, meaning residents are able to see the same patients over time and develop a trusting relationship. Houston Methodist Willow- brook is also known for its low-intervention birth training, with certied nurse midwives available to assist with natural childbirth in the hospital. “We are unique in our eort to include interdis- ciplinary training,” Hoopes said. “Our residents train with pelvic oor physical therapists, sonog- raphers, geneticists, certied nurse midwives, lactation specialists and neonatal nurses.”

The big picture

While St. Luke’s Health oers inpatient rehabilitation services at several hospitals, the new freestanding facility will be located on the St. Luke’s Health Springwoods Village campus. “The project aligns with our strategy of oering integrated, whole-person care convenient to home across clinics, acute care and post-acute facilities,” Jim Parisi, president of St. Luke’s Health Springwoods Village Hospital, said. Lifepoint Rehabilitation, an operating division of Tennessee-based Lifepoint Health, has more than 45 inpatient rehabilitation facilities across the country focusing on recovery from brain trauma and orthopedic injuries. “We look forward to working alongside St. Luke’s Health as we expand access to high-quality rehabilitation care in the Greater Houston area,” Lifepoint Rehabilitation President Russ Bailey said. The facility will include 40 private rooms and provide care to patients recovering from conditions including stroke, neurological disease, and brain and spinal cord injuries. The center will also have multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums and outdoor courtyards to encourage activity.

Ocials with St. Luke’s Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation broke ground on the new facility June 2.

Why it matters

What’s next?

Ocials with both facilities said the Spring- woods Village campus was selected due to the location near major highways and in an area that has experienced continued population growth over the last several years. Inpatient rehab services for medical condi- tions provide continuous nursing support and care throughout a patient’s healing process. According to Lifepoint Rehabilitation ocials, the freestanding facility will allow sta to focus on patient well-being without additional environ- mental stressors. “A dedicated facility like this enables our teams to provide the seamless and adaptive care that makes this possible,” Bailey said. St. Luke’s Health ocials said the new facility will increase access to intensive nursing care for patients in the north Houston area. According to data from the Centers for Medi- care and Medicaid Services, in order to qualify as an inpatient rehabilitation center, a facility must be able to provide at least three hours of “inten- sive” care daily for patients.

Ocials with both hospital systems broke ground on the new facility June 2 and anticipate accepting patients by summer 2027. While St. Luke’s Health is helping with the cost of constructing the facility, Lifepoint Rehabilitation will manage the day-to-day operations of the facility upon completion. “Through our continued investment in leading-edge technology and advancement of evidence-driven therapy models, we remain focused on restoring our patients to their daily lives in good health,” Bailey said. “This expansion of our ministry will allow St. Luke’s Health to bring excellent inpatient rehabilitation care with humankindness to one of the fastest growing areas of Greater Houston." MICHAEL LAWSON, HOUSTON MARKET PRESIDENT OF ST. LUKE’S HEALTH

Houston Methodist received the Healthgrades “triple crown” in 2026 by becoming accredited in clinical quality, patient safety and patient experience. The hospital system also received a $25 million commitment from The Duncan Fund to support the Houston Methodist Department of Medicine. The donation will help fund research for streamlined coordination of complex, multidisciplinary care by physicians, the applicability of artificial intelligence in hospital settings and the creation of five new endowed fellowships.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation awarded St. Luke’s Health - The Vintage Hospital with a recognition for Practice Transition Programs for the hospital’s nursing residency program. “This accreditation is a testament to the incredible dedication of our nursing leadership, educators, mentors and all who contribute to the success of our new graduate nurses,” said Ruth Owusu, DNP, RN, Chief Nursing Officer for the Houston Market. “It reflects our deep-seated belief in nurturing the next generation of nursing talent and our commitment to developing a highly skilled and compassionate workforce.”

The St. Luke’s - Springwoods Village hospital is celebrating 10 years of operations in the Spring area in 2026. “We are incredibly proud to celebrate ten years of fulfilling our promise to bring exceptional care to Spring,” said Jim Parisi, Hospital President “This milestone reflects the dedication of our amazing team and the incredible support we’ve received from our community. We look forward to many more years of healing and compassionate care for those we serve.” The hospital also officially launched a new orthopedics clinic in April, bringing in additional sport medicine capabilities alongside new equipment.

Commissioners approve extra $19M for HCSO projects Harris County Commissioners Court allocated an additional $19 million to the Harris County Sheriff’s and Fire Marshal’s offices to support ongoing capital improvement projects across eight law enforcement facilities.

More details All projects are on track for construction by late 2026 and early 2027, with estimated completion slated for the second quarter of 2028, according to the county sheriff’s office. Aside from the $19 million boost, funding for the projects comes from a $100 million public safety bond that voters approved in 2022, known as Proposition A.

The May 14 vote increased funding from $100 million to $119.73 million for the projects, which aim to enhance resiliency and technology at facilities in the HCSO’s patrol districts.

of this business. No, I lived a long life, and it was not an easy life, but the community has proved me wrong. Thank God. I’m so happy. I now have more belief in people,” Inna said. With Chef Davide Turano, an Italian chef with over 25 years of experience in the restaurant industry, Slice of Venice oers authentic Italian Cuisine. “My goal is for you guys to know what [Italian food] is supposed to tastes like [and] what they eat in Italy,” Inna said. From the oven Slice of Venice serves a variety of hand-tossed pizzas, including the Granny Pizza, a customer favorite made with tomato sauce, mozzarella, meatballs, Parmesan cheese and parsley. “Outside it’s crispy, but inside it’s soft. The cheese is perfectly melted, and the tomato sauce is not acidic, but it’s not super sweet either,” Inna said. The Pinsa Romana is another restaurant staple that consists of an ancient Roman style atbread. Unlike traditional pizza, Inna said its dough is made from a blend of wheat, rice and soy ours that are fermented for 72 hours. The slow-rising process creates a light, airy texture with a crispy exterior and a soft center that is easier to digest. From its scratch made pastas, the Zucchini Cram & Cont pasta is amongst the eateries menu favorites and is made with zucchini cream, zucchini chips, cherry tomato cont, eggplant and Parmesan cheese. For dessert Slice of Venice oers homemade tiramisu. Moving forward, Inna said she plans to add more pizza options to the menu including a Greek style pizza.

Located inside a family-friendly atmosphere, Slice of Venice brings a fresh take on Italian com- fort food to the Spring and Klein communities. Founded by Inna Klebanskaya in January 2025, the eatery was created with the mission to serve authentic pizza and handmade pasta made with quality ingredients. From pizza dough crafted without sugar and Italian our to scratch-made pasta prepared daily, every dish is designed to deliver avor without the heavy, bloated feeling often associ- ated with pizza, Inna said. What’s special about it? Along with her husband, Francesco G, a seasoned chef originally from Venice, the two create authentic Italian recipes bringing a piece of Venice to the area. Inna said when they were struggling and on the verge of closing in early 2026, TikTok food blogger davidspov visited the business and helped call his followers for help to sustain the business. After the video went viral, locals and nonlocals rushed to the eatery giving enough business and donations to keep the Slice of Venice alive. “This community was brought to me. You know, I was kind of losing faith in humanity, not because
