The second phase of Williams High School’s major renovation is the latest Plano ISD project to start construction as part of the district’s 2022 bond, according to a recent update from Tony Pearson, PISD director of planning and new construction. The gist The current and nal phase will include class- room, food services-cafeteria, athletics, ne arts and eld house renovations. Site and drainage improve- ments will also be addressed. The project started construction in February, and will cost $59,793,122. Several other bond projects are approaching milestones in their progress, including: Haggard Middle School, Jupiter Center, Murphy Distribution Center and Plano Senior High School.

$8.8 million project along Independence Parkway underway A Plano road project along sections of Indepen- dence Parkway is currently under construction. Over $8.8 million in funding has been allocated for two projects along Independence Parkway between Spring Creek Parkway and SH 121, Assis- tant Director of Public Works Carrie Jones said. The overview Both projects involve rehabilitation of the existing concrete ahead of a planned asphalt overlay for the section, Jones said. The two segments of the project are Spring Creek Parkway north to Hedgcoxe Road and Hedgcoxe Road north to SH 121. Total funding for the project is a little over $8.8 million, she added, with around $3.7 million for the Spring Creek Parkway to Hedgcoxe Road portion and about $5.1 million for the Hedgcoxe

City to consider short- term rental regulations

Short-term rentals in operation prior to the adoption of a one-year interim ban may continue to operate. “There is a fear that we’re going to get overrun with these, and there’s a fear that they will get opened in every single neighborhood,” Commissioner David Downs said. “The market and the demand is going to resolve that issue.”

The Plano Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval of a policy to regulate short-term rentals in the city during its April 1 meeting. The recommendation would allow live-in short-term rentals within any residential district without a specific-use permit, so long as another short-term rental is not within 300 feet. Renovations to the Sen. Florence Shapiro Council Chamber will result in some city meetings being held at the Davis Library for the next several months. The overview

The consistent improvements are one aspect that has made Plano’s parks nationally acclaimed. Plano’s Parks and Recreation Department earned the gold medal award in October from the National Recreation and Park Association, denoting it as the country’s top department for a city with a popu- lation of 150,001-400,000. The award recognizes departments for excellence in long-range planning and community engagement, among other factors. Plano Mayor John Muns credits the accessibil- ity of community and neighborhood parks as part of the reason Plano’s parks system is thought of so highly. “There are some amazing places around the country with mountains and beaches, and yet, Plano won the Gold Medal Award,” he said. “Acces- sibility is really the main reason we have that reputation as a good parks system. For everyone to have a park nearby is a real accomplishment.” The benefits of a flourishing parks system go beyond quality of life for Plano residents.

There are 39 active projects underway at Plano parks, and Plano Park Planning Manager Renee Jordan said more projects are always waiting in the wings. City ocials increased the parks budget by nearly 6% for this scal year. Jordan added that the city staggers improvement projects based on the age and condition of certain locations. The parks and recreation master plan was updated last July. The plan determines the schedule for renovation projects and lays out areas for potential new parks.

Hosting events, such as festivals and sports tournaments, helps to drive tourism in the city. “We usually provide them with a great experi- ence, and a lot of times they’ll come back,” Crim- mins said. Plano’s Director of Economic Development Doug McDonald added that the city’s parks can play a factor in helping to attract companies to the city. “It plays a role in us talking about the quality of life,” he said. “We definitely talk about our No. 1 park system in the state of Texas.”

Work will include enhancements to existing gateways as well as replacement of playground equipment, lights, the irrigation system and bathrooms.

With major mixed-use developments such as Collin Creek, Haggard Farms and the Texas Research Quarter each including an open space component, there will be more parks added with new trails to connect them to the existing parks system in the city. Jordan said future plans also include extending the trail system to connect with parks in Richardson, and providing residents with more places to play pickleball and cricket. She added that maintaining the currently quality of existing parks remains the department’s top priority, and improvement projects won’t slow down even as new projects pick up. “The most important thing that the department should be doing for the city of Plano is getting these park sites renovated,” Jordan said.

using “ish” in the name and when they found that the domain ish.com was taken, they named the business IshChicks. What’s special about it Schlarb said the boutique only carries merchan- dise that is colorful, unique and aordable. Providing a creative outlet was also important to the business owners. They pondered ideas such as customizable paper goods but that idea was soon replaced with printed cork products. They oer placemats, coasters, trivets, acrylic tray inserts and serving accents made of printed cork. They carry a variety of stock designs and customers can submit designs to create customized items.

“We were in Germany when it rst crystallized for real,” Schlarb said. “We turned down a street and there were rows of boutiques. Every single one of them was bright and cheery. Nothing was ridiculously expensive.” Five years later, in September 2022, they opened IshChicks in Plano. What’s in a name? The duo said they wanted the boutique to be “home decor-ish” and “gift-ish”. They focused on

Lovepacs relies on volunteers to serve Plano students

both are strong believers in the mission of the nonprot. In a nutshell Lovepacs provides mostly non-perishable, easy to open and minimal cooking food items to children on the free or reduced lunch program through public schools. The organization primarily supplies the boxed items during extended school breaks. Volunteers range from 3 to 89 years old. There are a variety of tasks that need to be done, such as decorating and packing boxes, stocking shelves, delivering boxes to schools and donating food items. Financial donations are needed as well.

The context When reecting on what it takes to get 1,500 Lovepac boxes delivered for every Plano ISD school break, the co-leaders listed the numerous contributions from local entities, including the fact that they pay $1 a month to Medical City Plano to rent three oce spaces. “Watching the boxes go out the door into peo- ple’s cars—there is something very satisfying about that,” Leavitt said. “I look at that box and I know it took months of preparation for this box to go to the school. That is a rewarding thing to see.”

Lovepacs was founded in 2011 by a group of parents in The Colony whose children voiced concerns about classmates who might experience food insecurity during school breaks. Although Ritu Gupta and Michelle Leavitt started volunteering with Lovepacs for dierent reasons and in dierent communities, they
