Judson ISD officials pick Cibolo Creek Middle as name for new school The sixth middle school in Judson ISD was named Cibolo Creek Middle School during the March 21 board of trustees meeting. The details Prior to the selection of a name, Judson ISD staff launched a survey for district stakeholders to provide input on a name that reflects the residen- tial community, geographic area or feature of the neighborhood, the local municipality, or to honor an outstanding person who has attained educa- tional prominence in the district. Chief Communications Officer Nicole Taguinod said over 500 people made recommendations on the naming of the new school. Around 126 of the names recommended honored outstanding people from Judson ISD.

The Judson ISD board of trustees March 21 approved the purchase of nine 77-passenger buses for the district. The details The purchase of the buses is part of the bond initiative from 2022, which included packages for safety and security, new facilities and transportation. Trustees unanimously approved the purchase in the amount of around $1.32 million from bond funds. According to the sales proposal, buses are estimated to be delivered in 300-365 days. Superintendent Milton “Rob” Fields III said there should be remaining funds to be used for the purchase of an additional bus in the future.

The board of trustees made the decision to name the school after a geographical feature in the region. Trustee Monica Ryan suggested that Cibolo Creek Middle School be the name for the new school due to residents in the district that live along Cibolo Creek being the most likely to attend the new school based on district feeder patterns. The name of the new school was approved unanimously. The school will be located adjacent to Wortham Oaks Elementary School and is expected to be completed by the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Students will return to classes Aug. 15.

The last day of school for Schertz-Cibolo- Universal City ISD was moved to May 30 during a March 19 board of trustees meeting. What you should know Originally, students were scheduled to have an early release day May 31. With this change, students will have one additional day of summer vacation.

In addition to elevated lanes, the section of I-35 from FM 3009 to FM 1103 will also be expanded to 10 total lanes in the NEX North project. The elevated lanes will serve as an expedited way to travel along I-35, featuring less access points to the ground lanes. Elevated lanes will also include turnarounds for emergency vehicles allowing for better response times, according to the project website. Expanding the lanes will help reduce traffic con- gestion from daily drivers. In 2023, the contractors working on the project completed 223 columns for the elevated lanes, Lopez said.

TxDOT has launched a website for the project to share information and updates with residents. The website is www.i35nex.com.

Lopez said in the coming months, steel girders will be installed over the lanes of Loop 1604 at the I-35 interchange, and commuters can expect temporary closures. “During this process, all lanes of Loop 1604 at the I-35 interchange will be closed 24/7 for one weekend,” Lopez said. TxDOT engineers said they are working to implement traffic management plans during construction to help reduce congestion along I-35 and ensure the safety of workers, motorists and pedestrians. While traffic changes will occur through- out the project, Lowder said she believes the end result will benefit Live Oak and surrounding communities. “It is our hope the commuter lane project will relieve much of the daily congestion while adequately accommodating for current and future travel demand,” Lowder said.

1103

After nearly two years of construction on the I-35 Northeast Expansion, areas around Live Oak, Universal City and Selma are starting to see elevated lanes constructed near the intersection of I-35 and Loop 1604. The entire project will cost nearly $3 billion, with NEX Central costing around $1.6 billion, NEX South costing nearly $940 million and NEX North costing around $430 million. Laura Lopez, public information officer for TxDOT said the central portion from Loop 410 to around FM 3009 is the largest part, adding elevated lanes on 9.5 miles of I-35. Donna Lowder, Live Oak economic development director, said city staff will update residents on traffic changes during the TxDOT project. “Our goal is to keep commuters safe and business commerce flowing in the best way possible,” Lowder said.

A new restaurant and entertainment venue has made its home in Cibolo, oering ax throwing and pizza. Owner Spencer Birtciel opened Axeshack on Oct. 28 after working in the entertainment industry. Using assets from the restaurant previously in the space, Birtciel said he was able to get assis- tance from the landlord of the retail development to help start Axeshack. “The landlord has really been the most pivotal part of all of this,” Birtciel said. On the menu The menu at Axeshack focuses on pizzas as a main course but also oers appetizers, salads, desserts and beverages. Popular pizzas at the restaurant include the Kick-Axe Supreme, featuring meat and vegetable toppings, and the Pepperoni Fury, featuring pepperoni and hot honey. The restaurant oers a selection of 12 pizzas, which can all have the crust customized to be thin and crispy, soft and uy, cauliower or calzone style, Birtciel said. Online ordering is also available at the restaurant. “It is all fresh-made dough, fresh-made sauce, and we have a full cocktail bar with a lot of West- ern Son [vodka],” Birtciel said. More details While the menu is one of the main appeals for Axeshack, the business also oers ax throwing games for groups to enjoy. Each lane at Axeshack supports six people and features games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four and other party games. For those looking to have a group outing, the busi- ness oers packages for groups of 50-plus people. Lanes can be reserved in advance prior to visiting the venue. Alongside ax throwing, Birtciel is rolling out specials throughout the week, including a ladies’ night every Monday and a board game night every Tuesday. On March 5, trivia nights were launched as part of board game night. Events and promotions are updated on the business’s website and social media pages. “It is still the rst year, so we are trying to lay down the foundation of what works this year and what could work next year,” Birtciel said.
