Magnolia FD begins planning after voters pass sales tax measure

MCESD No. 10 is also discussing a replacement for Station 186, which is currently located along FM 2978, Magnolia. The new station would be built at 310 Honea Egypt, Magnolia. Officials said future station decisions will lean on call volume and other response data.

Magnolia leaders are moving from campaign mode to planning mode after voters approved Proposition A, a sales tax measure expected to help Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 10 add firefighters, improve stations and plan future coverage. The measure, which passed May 2, allowed MCESD No. 10 to adopt an increased sales and use tax in areas that have not reached taxing limits, according to prior Community Impact reporting. Over the next few months, the district will work with an Insurance Services Office consultant to build a detailed capital improvement plan, department officials said. The goal is to use data to decide where to add staffing, place future stations and purchase apparatus, rather than make those calls by “guesswork,” Magnolia Fire Captain Bryan Perry said. The additional sales tax will begin being collected Oct. 1, with the first revenue expected around December because of a two-month lag between collection and receipt, according to the department. In Year 1, Perry said the focus will be staffing and bringing existing stations up to the standards of a career department. “We expect this to make a real difference,” Perry said. “As we increase the minimum staffing on each truck, we’ll get more firefighters on scene, which will allow for the emergency to be mitigated more quickly.” The department expects to post firefighter openings sometime after Oct. 1.

Residents will be able to track sales tax spending through the district’s normal budgeting process, Perry said. Budgets, amendments and financial information are posted on the department’s website, and spending requires board approval. The department also plans to share updates on social media as projects move forward. Officials said more firefighters on each truck should help crews manage emergencies faster, while additional stations would be the quickest way to reduce response times in growing areas.

Tomball City Council and the Tomball Economic Development Corp. got a clearer look May 12 at what the former First Baptist Church campus could become, but nearby residents made one thing just as clear: they want a say before the project goes any further. The joint meeting centered on Tomball Legacy Square, the planned redevelopment of the roughly 4.6-acre former church campus in Old Town Tomball. The TEDC engaged Webb Management in fall 2025 to study the site’s market demand, operations, economic impact and redevelopment potential for the former sanctuary, the historic 1949 chapel and fellowship hall, according to the agenda packet. The feasibility study recommends turning the campus into three pieces: an 800- to 1,000-seat performing arts hall in the former sanctuary, a visual arts center in the 1949 chapel and an arts education center in the fellowship hall. However, ocials repeatedly said the plans are still early. Lisa Covington, TEDC board president and City Council member, said the TEDC is still working through details such as venue size, funding, parking, green space and operators. The presentation also stated taxes will not increase because of the project, and the TEDC is not tearing down the main sanctuary or the 1949 chapel. No vote was taken at the meeting, as it was held for discussion only, and all items were presentation items.

“Just because something is in writing on a website does not mean decisions have been made,” Covington said during the meeting. A TEDC presentation also stated that no nal decisions have been made or approved beyond the purchase of the property and the designation of the project as an arts and cultural destination.

Nearby residents said they weren’t opposed to preserving the property or adding arts program- ming, but worried about the project’s scale. Kristin Heck, who lives on Hicks Street, said her home sits directly beside the project, and ooding is already a concern. Another resident, Christina Black, said the project backs up to her home on Commerce Street and raised concerns about noise, crowds and parking. “Parking is certainly an issue, because during these big events, I do have to ... block o my yard just to keep people from parking in it,” Black said. Others spoke in favor of the project, saying Tomball lacks a venue for larger local gatherings. Brandy Beyer, with the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce, said several local organi- zations have to leave Tomball for events because there is no facility in the city that can hold them.

The project remains in the concept stage. Per the TEDC presentation, conceptual recommendations are being presented, studies are ongoing and public input remains important. Future steps include continued community engagement, parking analysis, development renement and City Council review and approval, per the presentation. Wayne Hall, a TEDC board member, said keeping the property under TEDC control gives Tomball more certainty. “If ... someone else was to buy it, it could ... be a hotel, it could be houses, it could be an apartment complex,” Hall said. “So at least with the EDC controlling it, then we’ll ... know what’s going to go on there.”

Magnolia ISD looks to future after voters pass Proposition A

On May 2, Magnolia ISD voters passed a $465 million bond—Proposition A—which aims to address student overcrowding and district growth. The measure passed with 63.51% of the vote, while 36.49% of the votes were against the bond. By the numbers As previously reported, MISD’s Proposition A will fund the construction of three new schools, along with security, maintenance, and land and bus purchases. Back in 2025, the district attempted to pass a larger bond package, but it failed to pass. Per MISD ocials, last November, only 13% of parents in the district voted on the proposed bond measure. To address the low turnout in the May 2 election, the district held multiple community events informing locals on the need for the bonds to pass this upcoming election cycle. MISD Chief Communications Ocer Denise Meyers said that an estimated 25% of parents voted in this election cycle.

What’s next MISD Superintendent Jason Bullock said construction on Elementary School No. 10 and the new high school is set to begin as soon as possible, as the high school construction will take the most time. Other projects from the bond will take priority as well, including maintenance and security updates and new bus purchases. On May 12, MISD trustees approved Stewart Builders Inc. and B&C Constructors LP as the construction managers-at-risk for several of the district’s 2026 bond projects and approved purchasing around 100 acres of land located along the east line of FM 1486 for High School No. 3. Bullock said “gratefulness” is the word he and the school board would use to describe themselves after seeing the bond successfully pass May 2. “We wanted as many people ... as possible to come out and have their voice be heard, whichever way they chose to vote,” Bullock said.

TISD faces $8M shortfall partly due to new schools At the May 11 board meeting, Tomball ISD Chief Financial Ocer Zack Boles said the district is facing a projected $8 million shortfall for the 2026-27 scal year due to opening two new schools in August. Budget explained For FY 2026-27, the projected revenues and expenses are $256.4 million and $264.4 million, respectively. Boles said the projected shortfall is due to the openings of Tomball West High School and the fth-grade addition at Creekside Park Junior High in August, along with a general pay increase. Historically, TISD has maintained separate fund balances to help with district spending when needed. Boles said $8 million has been set aside for the opening of new schools, and suggested using a portion of it to alleviate the strain.

MISD OKs raises in 2026- 27 compensation plan Magnolia ISD trustees voted to approve the employee compensation plan, which includes raises and stipends for employees, for the 2026-27 school year at their May 12 meeting. A closer look Assistant Superintendent of Operations Erich Morris said that there will be a minimum 3% pay increase for teachers with zero to 10 years of experience, with that gure going as high as 6% for teachers with 26 years or more of experience. “It is closing the pay disparity for our veteran teachers, and it’s going to make it easier for us to, at some point in the near future, focus more on those 10 to 15 years as well,” Morris said. Bus drivers and food service workers will also receive a 3% raise, while custodians will receive a $2/hour raise.

TISD cannot comply with new bus bill On May 11, the Tomball ISD board of trust- ees voted unanimously to execute a statutory acceptance to the state stating the district does not have the required funds to comply with Senate Bill 546, which requires districts to use buses with three-point seat belts. Meeting highlights As previously reported, out of TISD’s 205 buses, 103 do not meet the new safety requirements. The total cost to retrot the 103 buses would be $3.24 million-$4.9 million . The cost for the district to purchase 103 buses would be $14.42 million. On May 11, TISD board Secretary Michael Pratt said that TISD’s buses over the past decade have historically been very safe. The district will advocate to the state for funds to help fulll the bill requirements.

Sorting out details The district is providing a $500 one-time reten- tion payment for employees who are on the payroll as of Sept. 15. Morris said a prior year fund balance associated with a one-time payment from a property value audit will pay for the incentive. Morris further explained that there is going to be a $50 to $100 increase in employer health insurance contributions, depending on the employee’s plan.

‘His life and legacy will live on’: Community remembers Jimmie C. Edwards during public memorial service

Community members gathered at the Montgom- ery County Veterans Memorial Park on May 2 to remember the life of Jimmie C. Edwards. Edwards, who died March 31, was a Vietnam veteran, served as Montgomery County judge and state representative, and founded the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission. “I just want to thank Jimmie and the Edwards family and also the commission that stood behind Jimmie during all of his vision,” state Rep. Will Metcalf said. “This is only the beginning. The best is yet to come. Although our founder and our spokes- person is no longer with us, his life and legacy will live on for many decades to come.” Two-minute impact The service included remarks from both Metcalf and Edwards’ wife, Debbie, as well as live music, including the national anthem, “Marines’ Hymn” and “God Bless America.” The memorial service concluded with a yover and an invitation to attendees to walk the park. “I look at this park, I look at this building, and I think, ‘It’ll be a long time before Jimmie’s name is forgotten,’” Debbie Edwards said. The big picture Montgomery County commissioners on April 9 approved a resolution honoring Edwards as a former county judge, U.S. Marine and founding leader of the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park. The court also declared April 9 Judge Jimmie C. Edwards III Memorial Day in Montgomery County. Edwards was a lifelong Montgomery County resident. During the Vietnam War, he volunteered

Sabra Farm oers locally grown produce in Magnolia Husband and wife Rabih and Sandy Sabra opened Sabra Farm in June 2024 to oer the com- munity a place to source produce grown locally. “Farming is how I worship the Lord,” Rabih Sabra said. “It includes taking care of the earth, of creation. It includes taking care of our neighbor and it includes taking care of our own body. That includes everything that the Bible wants us to do that can be beautifully expressed in farming.” What’s special about it As career missionaries often traveling, Rabih and Sandy Sabra noticed a dierence in how they felt after eating while overseas versus back home in Texas. Realizing the need for clean food in the area, the Sabras opened Sabra Farm to serve their own com- munity. Starting o with produce grown by Rabih Sabra himself, today Sabra Farm oers a variety of locally sourced products. Staying local At Sabra Farm, Rabih Sabra said customers can expect to be greeted by the Sabras themselves and provided with thorough information on its products.
