As one of the fastest-growing counties nation- wide, Fort Bend County is expected to reach 1 million residents by 2030—with the population potentially doubling to 2 million by 2050. In conjunction with University of Houston associate professor Jeronimo Cortina, the Fort Bend Regional Partnership has released its new Fort Bend 2050 Report, which is aimed at providing a roadmap to guide the county’s preparation for the incoming growth. “The report gives us a roadmap of how to meet the growth—it’s not whether we'll grow, we will—it’s whether our roads, water, housing and government can grow with us,” said Tariq Zafar, chair for the Fort Bend Regional Partnership. City of Fulshear sees continued progress on improving area cell service

Cell tower progress

Existing Underway Proposed

JORDAN CROSSING BLVD.

S. FIREHORN DR.

Progress continues on improving the city of Fulshear’s cell service, city ocials said. What’s happening? At an April 21 meeting, Fulshear City Council approved a specic use permit and lease agree- ment for the installation of a Verizon antenna within the Pecan Knoll elevated storage tank. The approval comes as the city continues its multi-year charge to advocate for greater cell coverage after residents have called with concerns about connectivity, which providers say is due to overloaded capacity on existing towers. Zooming in Fulshear ocials shared the progress of towers as of May 6, with updates from contractors as follows: • Cross Creek Bend Water Plant: Facing internal

delay with Verizon • FM 1093 Water Plant: Construction set to commence within a few weeks • Primrose Park: Construction to begin June 13 • Eagle Landing: Tower is installed with plans to go online in June • Pecan Knoll Antenna: Waiting on permit application but anticipates being online by end of summer • Tamarron Water Reclamation Facility: Complete and online • Rogers Road: Online Also of note Towers are built and leased out by indi- vidual contractors to cell companies, and revenue is shared with the city, City Manager

Zach Goodlander previously said. Towers typi- cally lease out space to multiple cell companies. However, Planning Director Josh Brothers said it’s important for residents to understand that cell service is not a city utility and still has to go through multiple avenues of approval following city permitting.

City of Katy implements golf cart regulations At an April 27 meeting, Katy City Council voted to approve an ordinance to allow golf cart use within city limits. Council member Rory Robert- son cast the sole dissenting vote, citing concerns with potential injuries or deaths. The ordinance comes after a discussion at a March 18 Katy City Council special meeting, which Police Chief Bryon Woytek said was in response to police already seeing golf cart use within the city. At the time, the city of Katy followed state stan- dards, which allowed use within master-planned communities, including Cane Island. The details The ordinance now allows golf cart and neigh- borhood electric vehicle use in city limits during daylight hours, which includes half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset, according to agenda documents. However, operation of all-terrain vehicles is prohibited within city limits. Going forward Following its passage, violators of the ordinance can face fines up to $200, per agenda documents.

Fulshear restricts commercial parking Fulshear City Council on April 21 approved an ordinance to prohibit commercial vehicle parking on residential streets to ensure neighborhood safety and maintain minimum roadway clearance. This comes after city officials enacted an ordinance limiting commercial trucks’ ability to use local streets for deliveries within the city. Zooming in According to agenda documents, prohib- ited vehicles include: • Commercial vehicles such as dump trucks, box trucks and flatbed tricks • Similar vehicles designed for the transport of goods or equipment • Trailers, semitrailers, pole trailer and house trailers Looking ahead The ordinance became effective upon its April 21 passage, per agenda documents. Offenders can be fined up to $500 per offense.

Katy Rock Shop brings geology to life for all ages After spending their weekends mining for rocks and minerals in Brazil, Jacob and Astrid Proctor relocated to Katy, where Jacob Proctor spent some of his teenage years growing up. While living in Brazil, the couple would mine for minerals and rocks and export their ndings to the previous owners and founders of the Katy Rock Shop, Bruce and Carol Hu. When the Hus were

ready to retire in 2019, the Proctors stepped in. Read all about it In the past few years, the Proctors have expanded the services oered at the shop, featuring experi- ences such as a mobile sluice, where students can hunt for gems, as well as dinosaur rides. The Proctors also added a variety of classes and camps for children and adults, with topics on the rock cycle, dinosaurs, fossils and eld testing. Dive deeper Along with classes, Katy Rock Shop also hosts events at birthdays, homeschool or co-op gather- ings and school workshops with Katy ISD.

Jacob Proctor said each class is customized for dierent ages and that they have developed curricula for various grade levels. “The best way I thought to really get people inter- ested in the same passion I am and that [Astrid] has is to teach people fundamentals about how rocks get here,” Jacob Proctor said. What to expect At Katy Rock Shop, customers can shop for rocks and minerals ranging from a few dollars to a hundred dollars. While crystals such as amethysts tend to be most popular, the store is also known for showcasing rarer minerals and large geodes.

Houston is set to see the rst of seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, along with 500,000 visitors from around the world, in less than 60 days. “This is a huge opportunity for Houston to build its brand globally,” said Chris Canetti, president of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Houston Host Committee. “But more than that, it’s a chance for us to tell our story. It’s an opportunity to show visitors what kind of city we are and what makes us great.” The FIFA World Cup is considered the world’s most-watched sporting event, outpacing the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games by viewership. The most recent tournament in 2022 reached roughly 5 billion viewers globally and saw over 3.4 million spectators, according to the FIFA website. In comparison, the Super Bowl in 2026 had roughly 125.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen, an audience measurement company. On the other hand, the 2020-21 Olympic Games had approximately 3 billion total viewers, according to the International Olympic Committee. “It’s hard to compare anything to the World Cup,” said Ryan Walsh, CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. “This is the largest sporting event in the world, not only by viewership and participation, but certainly for Houston.” World Cup lands in Houston

FIFA Fan Festival

The free 39-day festival in East Downtown will occur June 11-July 19, covering all 34 match days.

In addition to the seven matches held at NRG Stadium, which will be called Houston Stadium throughout the tournament, a 39-day fan festival is also set to take place in East Downtown. The event will take over approximately four blocks near Dallas and Lamar streets and can host around 15,000 fans per day. Admission is free. “Our overarching genesis and premises of Fan Fest is to be a giant watch party,” festival director Patti Smith said. “But it’s more than that. … Our goal for the entire festival is to tell the story of who Houston is as a city, and to do that through our food options, our entertainment and visuals.” Smith said the FIFA Fan Festival is set to include a main viewing area with several giant screens where fans can watch all matches livestreamed, a food and beverage zone, daily entertainment, activities, a beer garden and unique exhibits, including a 44-foot dome with a 4D experience inside, an Aramco pitch, or soccer eld, where youth tournaments will be held and a hall dedicated to showcasing Houston’s culture. “We know that not everyone can aord to go to a match, but everyone can be a part of the World Cup by going to the Fan Festival,” Smith said. Sugar Land will also host watch parties and other events as a Host City Supporter.

UH report nds housing instability drives poor mental health

High housing instability and high health utility index High average health utility index High housing instability Fort Bend housing vs. mental health

A report from the University of Houston shows housing instability is a consistent predictor of poor health outcomes among Fort Bend County residents. The report, titled Housing Instability and Mental Health, was authored by Jeronimo Cortina, a professor in the department of political science at UH, in partnership with Fort Bend County Health & Human Services and PolicyMap, according to a May 1 news release. The details Following a countywide survey, the study shows that aordability pressures, unstable occupancy and unsafe or substandard conditions raise residents’ risk of stress, depression and anxiety, per the release. However, the risks are not evenly distributed, with some ZIP codes seeing higher levels of

housing instability and mental health crossover. Notable quote “Housing isn’t just shelter—it’s the platform on which the rest of life is built,” Cortina said. “When that platform is shaky, everything else gets harder: holding a job, raising children, managing a chronic illness, staying connected to neighbors. What we’re seeing in Fort Bend County is that instability shows up in residents’ mental health long before it shows up in any single eviction or foreclosure number.” Looking ahead Report authors say improving mental health in Fort Bend will require coordination between housing stability and conditions that make stability meaningful. Recommendations include treating housing as a front-line health investment.
