Area cities seek solutions to house local workforce David Melgar, director of sales and marketing at Belmont Village Senior Living, said he cannot aord a house in the community where he works. Instead, Melgar commutes from Georgetown, where he was able to purchase a three-bedroom home in his price range a year ago. “The moment I wake up, I put on my GPS because that tells me the win- dow of time I have to leave,” Melgar said. “If I take a few extra minutes [to leave the house], it delays my arrival time to work.” Melgar said it takes him a little over an hour to drive each way to and from work. He estimates he drives 320 miles a week, putting gas in his car about every three days. While Melgar said his dream job makes the commute worth it, he said he understands that not all mem- bers of the workforce in the Lake- way and Bee Cave areas are willing or able to make the long commute. ABOUT US

Owners John and Jennifer Garrett launched the rst edition of Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 with three full-time employees covering Round Rock and Pugerville, Texas. We have expanded our operations to include hundreds of employees, our own printing operation and over 30 hyperlocal editions across three states. Our circulation is over 2 million residential mailboxes, and it grows each month with new residents and developments.

HIGHLIGHTS FROMTHISMONTH

FROMPHYLLIS: Welcome to our Annual Community Guide, where we take a deep dive on some of the top stories for the coming year and the biggest updates in transportation, development, health care, education, restaurants and retail. We deemed housing aordability one of our area’s major concerns, which is not just a concern in our region, but also all over Central Texas. What is interesting to note is how dierent municipalities choose to address workforce housing decits and what to look for on the horizon. As area retailers, hotels, restaurants and schools struggle to nd workers willing to make the daily trek to western Travis County, the impact is being felt by residents every day. Solutions won’t come quickly, but some ocials feel the urgency more than others. Phyllis Campos, GENERALMANAGER

HEALTH CARE AustinPublic Health raises COVID-19 risk level to Stage 5

LAKE TRAVIS-WESTLAKE COVID-19 DATA

RECENTLY REPORTED

BY BENTON GRAHAM

A seven-day moving average of more than 50 new hospital admis- sions is considered Stage 5. The Austin-Travis County area has been above that level since Dec. 31. The Travis County positivity rate is also within Stage 5 threshold, sitting at 29.7% as of Jan. 5. The Stage 5 guidance means the vaccinated population should wear masks during low-risk gatherings with people outside of their house- hold and avoid high-risk activities. According to an APH official, fully vaccinated people include those who have received both doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine or the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Anyone not fully vaccinated should avoid travel and gatherings with people outside their household altogether in addition to opting for takeaway and curbside dining and shopping, health officials said. Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County health authority, said while the omicron variant does seem to be causing more breakthrough infections for people who are fully vaccinated or boosted, vaccination is still a critical defense. “It is important that we continue to get vaccinated to protect our- selves from getting [a] severe disease to protect us from having to go back into the hospital and to protect those of us who are vulnerable to severe disease and death.” As hospitalizations have increased, ventilator use has not increased to the

From Dec. 1-29, the ZIP code with the most new cases of COVID-19 in the Lake- Travis-Westlake area was 78746 with 133 cases. Less populated ZIP code 78733 had the fewest new cases with 31.

Austin Public Health officials announced Jan. 6 the agency is shifting its risk-based guidelines from Stage 4 to Stage 5 for the Austin-Tra- vis County area. The change comes as the omicron variant has quickly spread through- out the area, and APH key indicators have shifted into Stage 5 thresholds. “Now we’ve been here before. We know what works, and we know what to do. I’m also aware that we are all tired, and we want to be done with this virus,” Mayor Steve Adler said during a Jan. 6 press conference. “So we really need each of you to be even more vigilant to take even more vigi- lant action to protect our community, our workforce and our economy.”
