Now we can do some much needed expansion and start hiring more physicians.” As such, Harwell said she intends to use part of the grants to hire more staff to send to the health center’s satellite campuses in Spring, Willis and Huntsville. Marketing and Communications Manager Courtney Galle said renova- tions will also include creating a new entrance and expanding the square footage of the top floor to accommo- date a larger women’s health clinic. Further, the behavioral health program will see expansion. “There is a big demand for mental health right now,” Harwell said. “We aren’t even close to funding that on our own, so this grant will help us double the size of our counseling team and reach more patients who need us.”

Lone Star Family Health Center received eight grants in January totaling $908,600 to help fund key projects, including expanding the behavioral health program, creating an adult dental service, providing free cancer screenings and upgrading buildings. Karen Harwell, CEO of Lone Star Family Health, said these grants help keep services affordable for patients. “The population we serve is primarily low income,” she said in a phone interview. “We don’t turn anyone away, even if they can’t pay the full cost up front, so these grants are vital to us being able to charge the patient what they can afford.” Three of the grants will be used to renovate and expand the current Conroe building located at 605 S. According to a news release March 2, the Conroe ISD Bond Plan- ning Committee reviewed recom- mendations for new school buildings during its first four meetings. The committee will meet seven more times before the final meeting July 17. Proposals include a potential new high school to alleviate Conroe High School; new ninth-grade and ele- mentary school campuses for Caney Creek feeder zones; a seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade campus in the Grand Oaks High School feeder zone; and a new junior high in the Conroe feeder zone. “At the very first meeting, we asked the [committee] what their priorities are,” Superintendent Curtis Null said during a March 7 workshop. “Their priorities were a high school in Con- roe and a Caney Creek high school as well. ... Our top end, or the ceiling, for a package is about $1.8 billion.”
