Education

BY KAREN CHANEY

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD superintendent Brad Schnautz welcomed students back to school in August.

KAREN CHANEYCOMMUNITY IMPACT

COURTESY GRAPEVINECOLLEYVILLE ISD

Get to know rst-year Grapevine-Colleyville superintendent Schnautz Brad Schnautz started his career in education in 2002 as a teacher and coach. Over the ensuing 20 years, he said he has worn many hats in education, including being the deputy superintendent of Grapevine-Colleyville ISD for ve years and serving as superintendent in another district. This is his rst role as GCISD superintendent since being named the lone nalist in February. Schnautz spoke with Community Impact after the start of the school year about what attracted him to the district, what is on his to-do list and the path to his current position. Why did you decide to pursue a career in education? I had a desire to positively impact the lives of young people, and I felt like public education would be a great platform to do that. I’ve been very fortunate and blessed to hit dierent roles in public education that blessed me and gave me the opportunity to not only impact students’ lives but also the adults we serve and support. This is my calling; this is my mission eld. Explain your background as a superintendent. This is my second superintendency. I was a superintendent in Lexington ISD. Throughout my leadership journey, I’ve had mentors who invested in me and really encouraged me to continue to

ascend in educational leadership. I was a high school principal [in Magnolia ISD] from 2012 to 2015, we had a campus of around 2,000 students. I became the superintendent in Lexington ISD in 2015, which only had 1,000 students. It wasn’t too big or overwhelming, but it was a new role so there was a lot to learn. The learning curve was not too

campuses and extracurricular, that was my lane. I had 10 direct reports and every day my job was focused on serving and supporting the work that takes place on the academic side. Now that I’ve transferred over to the superintendency, I oversee all of it. Instead of the 10 direct reports, I have six chiefs that report to me and the executive director of communications. I don’t know everything about everything, I know a good bit about everything and that’s because I have an amazing team. I report to the board, I’m their lone employee. What are the top three things on your to-do list as the superintendent? First is getting our strategic plan nalized and in place to lead us through our work in the next ve years. Secondly, is making sure we maintain a balanced budget while looking for ways to increase employee compensation. Number three is increas- ing opportunities to recognize and support our employees and teachers. It’s important to me that our employees feel valued and appreciated. What are the top three qualities you see in exceptional teachers? They love their students, they’re passionate about what they teach, and their students are so excited to be in their class and they can’t wait to come back the next day. When you hear that from students, you know that the teacher is a rock star.

steep; it was a good next step for me. Why did you accept this position?

Prior to being named the superintendent [here], I was the deputy superintendent for ve and a half years. When you serve somewhere and work with people for that long, you develop a love for the peo- ple, and you’re committed to the work. I’m also a parent. We have four children. My oldest graduated in 2021 from Grapevine, and I have three children in our schools. What experience did you have prior to this position that proved benecial? I’m proud of the fact that I’ve served in many roles in public education. I started out as a class- room teacher—I taught math and was a coach for six years. Being a classroom teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and superintendent helps me in my job because I’m able to relate to teachers, campus leaders and other auxiliary areas. I love rolling up my sleeves and working with our people. I don’t feel like I’m a sit-in-the-oce type of guy. I want to be serving the people and make it the best district it can be. You were the deputy superintendent since 2017. How has that changed since becoming the superintendent? Anything that was related to academics at our

Tarrant County College’s Northwest campus gets new spaces

BY MARK FADDEN

By the numbers

The outlook

Lace said the funds for the project came from an $825 million bond program approved by Tarrant County voters in 2019. Lace said the Northwest Campus redevelopment was $373 million. While construction is ongoing to improve the campuses, Lace noted the students won’t have to see hefty increases in the cost of education. On Sept. 21, the TCC board of trustees approved the following increases to tuition rates—the first increases since the 2018-19 academic year—begin- ning in spring 2024: • In-county resident tuition will increase by $5 to $69 per credit hour, which translates into $1,035 per semester for a full-time, in-county resident taking 15 credit hours. • The out-of-county resident tuition will increase from $126 to $131 per credit hour. Even with the increase, TCC maintains the second-lowest tuition of Texas’ top 10 community colleges, according to a district news release.

The new building, Northwest 1, serves as what Lace called the campus’s “front door” where campus administration is housed. He said there are also 16 classrooms in the building to help foster connections between students and staff. Lace also mentioned several upgrades in the new buildings that will help the learning environment evolve, including: • Classrooms being modernized to support the latest in technology and create collaborative learning environments • A computer network lab offering state-of- the-art technology for students to learn how to build networks • Library additions, including a “maker space” and an Anatomage table, which portrays the human body and can be adjusted to show various layers of the body

While the completed project of four new buildings is still more than two years in the future, Lace said the first two buildings are in use for the 2023-24 school year. “Because the new buildings have to occupy the same general footprint as the old ones, the demolishing of the old ones and the erection of new ones have to be done in stages so that there’s enough classroom space for classes to continue,” Lace said. Officials with Gensler, a global architecture, design and planning firm, worked with TCC officials to design the new buildings to create a “knowledge hub” to accommodate the different learning styles students have. Allison Marshall, Gensler senior associate and studio director, said in a June news release that officials did a survey and found “the main reasons students come to campus and stay on campus are for socializing and working with classmates.”

What they’re saying

Students like Vexa Balderas are excited for the new buildings because of how the design allows for interaction and collaboration. She said the new buildings feel more open and welcoming, and the old buildings were cramped and dark. She added the old buildings didn’t have much open space, where the new buildings allow students to hang out and talk to other people. A first-year student, she started school in the spring semester of the 2022-23 school year.

Meison Studio strives to be future of retail shopping in Southlake When brothers Steven and Eric Wang opened Meison Studio in Southlake in 2022, they did so with experience gleaned from growing up in the fashion industry. Their parents, Eddie and Ming Wang, are the founders of Meison and are the manufacturers of clothing lines Ming Wang and Missook. Steven Wang was inspired by what he saw when

he visited a Trunk Club, which was a fashion studio specializing in personalized styling. “It was welcoming, an incredible alternative way to shop,” said Kelsey Cameron, studio manager and head stylist. “He saw that and said, ‘That is the future of retail and luxury shopping rather than going into malls.’” A closer look Prior to the complimentary appointment with a stylist, customers will complete a questionnaire where they provide their details and how they like their clothes to t. Upon arriving, their stylist will present outts they selected for them based on the data gathered from the questionnaire.

“One of the best things I hear from people who come in is they wind up trying things they would have never tried or picked out for themselves, but they wind up loving it,” Cameron said. The specics Meison Studio’s selection includes casual, professional and special occasion attire, Cameron said. “A woman said she hadn’t shopped much since having two children; she’d been stuck in leggings and hadn’t put on jeans in years,” Cameron said. “I educated her on attering styles and pulled a pair of jeans that made her feel so good. She said she nally feels she can wear cuter clothes again.”

Peace, Love and Little Donuts gives back to Southlake community Vivisara Chinthongprasert—the owner of Peace, Love and Little Donuts—said she uses her business to give back to the Southlake community. Chinthongprasert bought the Southlake location, the only one in Texas, in 2021 after moving to the city from Thailand. The shop specializes in petite cake doughnuts with more than 50 avors. Chinthongprasert said popular doughnuts include the maple brown sugar with bacon; apple pie; and coee cake with mocha icing and raspberry true. In July, she attended the Southlake Foundation’s Youth Entrepreneur Summit at Southlake Tutoring Academy, which encouraged high school students to present and promote their businesses. She also met nonprot group Plate To Purpose, whose mis- sion is to help mitigate food insecurity by partnering with local restaurants to salvage leftover food and donate it to charities like Grace Grapevine. After becoming one of three business owners to partner with the nonprot, Chinthongprasert began saving leftover doughnuts each day for the group. The group then donated the food to Grace, which parceled it out to community residents, she said. “We grow thanks to the support of the commu- nity, so I love to give back,” she said. “It’s a must.” While Chinthongprasert said she plans to expand her community service into the other nearby chambers of commerce—such as Grapevine, Keller and Roanoke—at the end of the year, right now she is focused on helping Southlake. “Even though it’s not my hometown, I feel like home here,” she said.

A popular menu choice is the cake doughnut with raspberry icing drizzled with raspberry sauce and topped with chocolate chips.
