The business opened in January 2019. “To be a good engineer, you have to make sure all your bases are covered and understand the importance of what good documentation looks like, what a good scope [of work] looks like,” Shepherd said. “All of that is very applicable to this business.” According to Shepherd, PuroClean’s initial role is to assist customers by assessing property damage on-site and guring out the best path forward to restore as much damage as possible. “It’s not unusual for us to walk into a situation that’s completely chaotic,” he said. “We’re meeting people sometimes on the worst day of their life. Despite the experience he brought to the job, Shepherd said there was still a learning curve when he rst opened PuroClean. Within the rst nine months of opening, Kingwood was hit with a tornado and experienced several ooding events, including Tropical Storm Imelda. “It was kind of a baptism by re,” he said. Shepherd said he is content with keeping his business in the Kingwood area, noting he likes to be able to service the area he calls home. “[The most rewarding part] is being able to accu- rately scope a job so [customers] get an equitable payout from their insurance company, and [their property] is made whole or even better,” he said.
