ROUNDROCK Officials approved a $74,047 engineering services agreement with Walker Partners LLC for the replacement of about 1,500 linear feet of pipe described as “suspect.” The pipe is part of the Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority, which experienced a pipe failure on an existing 36-inch water line in Lake Travis in December 2020. Round Rock Utilities Director Michael Thane said during a Feb. 22 meeting that during an underwater inspection of the rest of the pipe, the 1,500-foot segment of “suspect” pipe was installed improperly and has multiple potential failure points. Under the agreement approved by council, Walker Partners will take on project management, design, agency, stakeholder coordination, land acquisition and special services. The actual project will involve constructing a parallel pipeline along the existing 1,500-foot segment to supply BCRUA customers with water until the deep-water intake is completed. The BCRUA is a partnership among Leander, Cedar Park and Round Rock. The total cost of the contract is $277,645, with Round Rock’s portion representing 26.67%. Construction crews completed repairs on the BCRUA’s

SUSPECT PIPE A 1,500-foot length of pipe will be replaced through the BCRUA partnership among Leander, Cedar Park and Round Rock following an investigation of the December 2020 intake failure. Archer said crews needed to perform a three-week pipeline inspection, and additional forensic evaluations may be needed. Those inspections and evaluations were carried out, and that is how the issues were discovered, Thane said. broken pipeline May 2, 2021. At the time, project engineer Aaron Archer said the pipe manufacturer had not seen a break like that before. The underwater pipe likely had a manufacturer defect, he said.
