Minutes later, the same tornado damaged several homes under con- struction and other property in Hutto before making its way all the way to Granger in northeast Williamson County. Two days later on March 23, Round Rock was abuzz with activity. Workers gathered debris into piles; chainsaws whittled errant branches
from fallen trees into more stackable pieces; and crews repaired infrastruc- ture along busy streets. The residential roads hit by the tor- nado became congested, packed with various types of repair vehicles. “When [the tornado] hit, I mean, we didn’t have time. It was just, it was so quick,” Round Rock resident Lindsey Topolski said March 22. Topolski’s home took a massive CONTINUED ON 38

The Texas Department of Trans- portation broke ground March 9 on a project to improve southbound congestion on I-35 from Hwy. 79 to SH 45 N. Joined by county and city o cials, TxDOT representatives announced the start of a project to construct an extended entrance and exit lane between Hwy. 79 and SH 45 N to improve congestion. TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson said this stretch of road is the 34th most congested portion of roadway in the state. If approved, the city could borrow funds at or below market interest rates and save around $3.7 million in interest, Chief Financial O cer Susan Morgan said. “We want to take advantage of these where we can; it will save us a great amount of money and make those roads a little bit cheaper all at one time,” Morgan said. “It’s one of those [situations] where with a little bit of teamwork, we should be able to take advantage of some discounted nancing.”
TxDOT will extend the southbound auxiliary, or merge, lane from the Hwy. 79 entrance ramp to the SH 45 N exit ramp and eliminate a forced merge. The project is expected to be complete in early 2023, weather permitting. The agency awarded the construction contract to JD Abrams L.P. for $8.4 million as part of the Texas Clear Lanes project that seeks to address and resolve tra c conges- tion at pain points across the state. Global water treatment company Ovivo broke ground on its 110,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Hutto on March 9. Located in Hutto’s Innovation Business Park, Ovivo will use the plant mainly to produce ceramic membranes for ltering water and wastewater. “We are bringing membrane manufacturing into America. Previously, we had to buy membranes from places like Japan, Germany and Denmark, but now our technology will be home-grown and homemade,” Ovivo representative Mike Snodgrass said at the groundbreaking. As part of an agreement with the Hutto Economic Development Corp. passed last August, Ovivo is required to invest $25 million in the site by the end of 2024 and create 96 full-time jobs by the end of 2027.

Skybox Datacenters, a national data center development rm headquartered in Dallas, plans to build a new 141,000-square-foot data center in P ugerville. P ugerville City Council approved an eco- nomic development performance agreement between the P ugerville Community Develop- ment Corp. and Skybox during a March 8 regular meeting. Per the agreement, the PCDC will provide Skybox an expansion grant of up to $1.58 million over a 10-year period. To qualify, Skybox must construct a facility prior to Jan. 1, 2024, secure at least one tenant and certify a minimum investment of $50 million. The release states Skybox owners and occu- pants intend to invest up to $548 million in P ugerville and bring up to 10 full-time jobs to the city. “Skybox is excited to launch our newest data center facility in P ugerville, which o ers innovative, sustainable and adaptable turn-key and powered shell solutions that will bene t our enterprise and hyperscale customers in Austin and across the country,” Skybox CEO Rob Morris said in the release. Construction on the facility, located at the northeast corner of New Meister Lane and Meister Lane, is expected to begin by the end of the year.
