La Casita Bakeshop Local pastry chef builds award-nominated bakery in Richardson O ver the last six years, Maricsa Trejo has experienced a long journey to becoming an award-nominated pastry chef. She was rst nom- inated in 2022 for Outstanding Baker of the Year before the restaurant was nominated as Outstand- ing Bakery of the Year in 2023. “It would be awesome if we could win, because I get to share it with everybody,” she said. On top of what La Casita serves, Trejo makes additional pastries throughout the week and then wholesales those to coee shops across North Texas. Trejo said wholesaling pastries has been an integral element of the business since she rst started La Casita. “Wholesale is our sugar daddy,” she said. “If we ever need a new oven or anything, our wholesales can give us the money.” In addition to the Richardson location, La Casita has started developing smaller storefronts, known as La Casita Coee, with a location in Rowlett and another planned to open in Frisco later this year.

Starting in the back of the former Small Brewpub in Dallas, Trejo began making pastries she would sell to other local coee shops. After working out of several temporary spaces, La Casita Bakeshop found its rst permanent location in Richardson in February 2020. Richardson became a welcoming home to the business as it started to add restaurant services and open as a community coee/pastry spot on the weekends, Trejo said. “I don’t know why, but we got embraced by everybody [in the community],” she said. “People will walk from their houses around here just to come here on weekends. You don’t really get to see that anymore where people like interacting with each other.” Trejo further expanded the business at the start of 2023, moving into a bigger space in the same shopping center. The new location allows La Casita to expand its restaurant space while continuing to develop new recipes. Open on weekends until all goods are sold, the
