One month does not look like the other.” Heard said despite the risk, the business has been worth it. She said overall, the personal and profes- sional growth she has experienced has been worth it. Heard said by opening the business, she has had the ability to be more involved in her family’s lives, which she was unable to do while working a corporate job. “I went everywhere with my laptop. ... Even if I was physically present, I was never mentally present,” Heard said. Further, she said downtown Conroe has wel- comed her business, and she said she loves getting to know other businesses and spending her lunch and dinner breaks dining in nearby restaurants. “I love being at the store, the community. ... Everybody wants to grow,” Heard said.

In 2022, she left the corporate world and opened Almost August. “I feel like God moved me this way,” Heard said. “It was a great opportunity, a chance to grow, and so I took it.” Almost August is a one-stop shop for self-care needs. Heard said she is particular about what she puts on her skin and wanted to provide Conroe residents with the ability to pamper themselves. The shop features handmade products, such as soaps, linen sprays, bath bombs and candles. The business also oers group candle-making classes for customers to blend their own candle. Heard said she started making soaps in 2016. Originally just making soaps for family members, Heard said soap making became a hobby. Over the years, she said she tried balancing soap making as a small business but realized she wanted to put all
