ACC approves free tuition pilot program Austin Community College will provide up to five years of free tuition, after the community college’s board of trustees approved the pilot measure in April. About the program The proposal, brought to the college system’s board of trustees by Chancellor Russell Lowery- Hart, will create a zero-cost tuition program for students who graduate from local high schools, charter schools, and those who have completed General Educational Development, or GED, as well. Homeschooled students will also qualify. The details Eligible students could qualify for up to five years of free tuition and have three years from graduation to access these funds.
Schools to build semiconductor center Officials with The University of Texas at Austin announced in March a partnership with the Austin Community College District and Texas Institute for Electronics to create a semiconductor training center to meet demand for jobs. Sorting out details The partnership will: • Create a joint Semiconductor Training Center for students to receive hands-on technical training • Host programs to advance or transition workers into the industry • Develop curriculum and credentialing, with plans for K-12 partnerships Officials say the center’s programs could begin as early as January.
ACC service area All high school students graduating this May who live within the community college’s service area could qualify for free tuition under the program.
