Pearland changes speed limits along McHard, Shadow Creek

Speed limit changes

Those driving on Shadow Creek Parkway in Pearland will have to slow down but can speed up at parts of McHard Road after Pearland City Council voted May 13 to adopt speed limit changes along the thoroughfare. The details The speed limit on McHard Road between Cullen Boulevard and FM 561 is being increased to 45 mph from 35 mph, according to agenda doc- uments. The road between FM 561 and Mykawa Road, which is newly built, will also be 45 mph. Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transpor- tation, which maintains Shadow Creek Parkway, recently conducted a study that found the road- way had higher driveway density and crash rates compared to the statewide average, documents show. As a result, officials recommended reducing the speed limit between Trinity Bay Drive and Hwy. 288 by either five or 10 mph. The segment was previously between 45 and 50 mph.

What else? Part of the study consisted of seeing how fast vehicles are going on the segments of roads, with officials using the 85th percentile, meaning at or below the speed that 85% of vehicles are traveling, according to city documents. That speed, mea- sured for each road in question in March, ranged from 45 mph to 52 mph.

Looking ahead The new speed limits will go into effect once Pearland city staff replace the signs, Pearland Communications Director Josh Lee said. Work on that should start the week of June 10. City offi- cials will send the executed ordinance to TxDOT officials, who will replace the speed signs along Shadow Creek Parkway.
