TECHNOLOGY Frisco seeing continued installation of 5Gnodes throughout city

5G IN FRISCO In 2022, the total amount of poles supporting 5G nodes in Frisco could reach up to 200. A large sum of them are in the southern region of the city near Stonebriar Centre mall.

This year, cellular providers will install new infrastructure for 5G services in Frisco, city officials said. The fifth generation of cellular technology can provide higher data speeds with less delay than 4G, according to the Federal Communications Commission website. Some 5G services provide coverage areas with data speeds up to 100 times faster and “almost instantaneous response time,” the website states. Frisco’s Chief Innovation Officer Jason Cooley said during the Frisco Winter Work Session in February that Verizon and AT&T are installing 5G nodes at a high rate in the city. In total, Cooley said more than 100 5G node locations have been installed, and about 50 are in the approval process. “You’re starting to see a big pop in deployment now,” Cooley said. Each pole has a radius of roughly 300-500 feet, according to Cooley. Most of them are located on utility poles, but nodes also appear on ornate- ly-designed node poles seen in Frisco Square and narrow service poles. Areas of focus for 5G installation for providers and the city include Independence Parkway, Coit Road, The Star District and the vicinity around Stonebriar Centre mall. In the future, more 5G towers could be installed along Teel and Eldorado parkways, in northwest Frisco and potentially in residential neighbor- hoods. Currently, state law does not allow for 5G nodes to be installed in residential neighborhoods, according to Cooley. “As we progress, as the city grows [and] as resources become more of a priority here, you’ll see more [5G poles],” Cooley said.

Data speeds are up to 100 times faster than 4G. A total of 200 5G nodes are planned in Frisco throughout 2022.

Each node has a radius of 300-500 feet. Most major carriers will shut down 3G services by the end of the year.
