Baylor Scott & White broke ground in January on a $220 million expansion to its Round Rock Medical Center. The expansion will bring addi- tional operating rooms and patient beds for general care, but Trenton Vaughan, BS&W vice president of patient care, said it is also introduc- ing space for several types of care the hospital did not previously oer. Among the new facilities is a cardiac catheterization lab, part of which opened earlier this year. Cardiac catheterization is a process for diagnosing the condition of a patient’s heart in a way that is less invasive, BS&W cardiologist Dr. Jose Condado Contreras said. “As our operation has continu- ously grown here in Round Rock, we were in need of getting better equipment [and] better technol- ogy,” Condado Contreras said.

The new addition, which will open in June, will provide care to patients with complex and acute neurological conditions, according to the release. The upgrade is part of a $280 million expansion that Ascension Seton announced in April. Dr. Alan Nova is among the health care professionals leading the unit. “The benets of a neurocritical care unit in our community are signicant. The opening of this unit not only enhances the team’s ability to compassionately care for patients and aggressively treat

“[The cardiac catheterization lab] allows us to do better pictures with less radiation, so it’s safer for the patients and for us providers.” Another focus for the hospital as it expands is care for women and children. The project includes a neonatal intensive care unit as well as an upgraded labor and delivery department with new equipment.
