Meet Travis Baker

Austin Metro Publisher

What’s your typical day as a CI Publisher? TB: One thing I love about my job is that no two days are the same, each lled with new challenges and opportunities. On average, my day starts with some internal meetings. Next, I am in the eld riding along with a sales rep to help pitch a local business as to why our advertising portfolio is the best investment they can make. Then I’m at a chamber networking event, and throughout the day I may be mixing in some editorial decisions on late breaking content, scheduling future stories, etc. Each day my calendar is booked, but rarely is there a day playing out as planned.

What’s your favorite memory working for CI? TB: I’ve had many great memories over my 13 years. One that sticks out the most is when we launched a paper in my hometown of New Braunfels and saw the emails ooding in after our rst delivery. I started documenting them, and when I got to page seven or eight, I realized it was never going to end. The launch was rewarding for myself and also the community.

Where might CI expand to next in your metro? TB: Good question. We have quite a few fans out there, and they are not shy to let us know where we’re needed. I’ve heard from people in Waco, Killeen, Temple, Bastrop and Highland Lakes, to name a few. I look forward to the day that every community across Texas has Community Impact serving it.

Voters approved funding for the project as a part of the 2022 Bond Program. On May 11, Cedar Park City Council authorized the project’s construction through a $1.95 million contract with Texas Road LLC. Brickey said that while temporary repairs were made, “a complete street reconstruction is required to permanently repair the roadway.” The project will involve the removal and replacement of 16 inches of pavement, road base and material under the road, Brickey said. The impact: During construction, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction on the northbound side as crew members work on the southbound lanes. Two-way traffic will then be moved to the south- bound lanes as workers reconstruct the northbound lanes.

Maritza Gallaga, RRISD’s interim chief of public aairs and communi- cations, said the district has no record of a prior tax rate election, which is the mechanism by which Texas school districts can levy a higher tax rate to generate more property tax revenue. payments have increased from $14.8 million for the 2021-22 school year to more than $85 million for 2022-23, district sta said. Ocials have not yet ordered a VATRE, but the rst step in the elec- tion process would be for the board to adopt its proposed budget June 20.

WILLAMSON COUNTY Nonprofits addressing homelessness and substance use disorders in Williamson County will receive over $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding. The Williamson County Commissioners Court approved the funding at a May 23 meeting for Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Family Eldercare and Yel- low House Foundation. Nonprofit representatives said the funding addresses an increased need for their services as Williamson County grows. “Go make a difference and save more lives,” County Judge Bill Gravell said after passing the three items. Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a homeless ministry based in Austin, will use the $1.4 million to expand its permanent affordable housing development Community First! Village. The funding will support Phase 3 of the 51-acre community, covering infra- structure costs and the construction of 500 homes. Family Eldercare will receive $600,000 to con- nect homeless individuals to housing and provide

supportive services, such as case management at Community First! Village. Alan Graham, founder and CEO of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, said a longtime partnership with Family Eldercare has allowed the community to provide better support for its residents. “Housing alone will never solve homelessness; the community will,” Graham said. “The marriage of this partnership with Family Eldercare is a perfect example of that.” Yellow House Foundation, an alcohol and sub- stance use recovery nonprofit in Cedar Park, will

use its $300,000 in funding to cover transitional costs as it moves from its temporary location to a new space in Leander. The facility has been under construction since January and is expected to open in January 2024, said Hal Cromwell, a board member who coordinates fundraising. Cromwell said the new ARPA funding is critical as the volunteer-run organization continues to grow with over 3,000 people attending Yellow House Foundation meetings each month. “This helps us bridge the gap [until] we’re in our new home and self-sustaining,” Cromwell said.

Former Council Member Stephen Thomas was unable to seek re-elec- tion due to being appointed to the role previously in June 2022. Hutchinson has lived in Cedar Park since 2012 with her husband and four children. A keen dedication to public service inspired her to run for City Council, she said. As a council member, Hutchinson said her main priority is to help maintain the city’s positive state. “I think our city is really well run and doing amazing with the stage of development that it’s in now,” Hutchinson said. “My goal really is to just kind of keep that train on the track and keep it the wonderful place that it is.”
