One of the hallmarks of the new digestive health center is the updated imaging equipment, used to sooner and more easily diagnose gastrointestinal issues.

HOSPITAL UPDATE Houston Methodist West Hospital Houston Methodist West Hospital will open a dedicated digestive health center in the northwest tower of the hospital in the last week of June. The $10 million project, which broke ground in spring 2021, will double the size of X-ray and advanced procedure rooms, and it has capabilities for anesthesia and lab imaging, all in the same space. This is intended to allow for greater collaboration between physicians, according to hospital executives. Kyle Stanzel, chief operating ocer, said the decision to build a digestive health space was based on health trends, a lack of physicians available to service these needs and a push toward prevention with better technology to detect colorectal cancer earlier. “We [anticipate] outpatient colorectal cancer services are going to grow by 11%, and inpatient [services will grow] by

5%,” Stanzel said. “The digestive health center will have the latest imaging equipment that allow us to better—and sooner—diagnose whatever that person’s [gastrointestinal] or pulmonary issues.” The west campus’s new digestive health center will have seven gastrointestinal-service suites to prepare patients for surgery, ve procedure suites, and 10 recovery suites with additional shell space for future use. For sta, the digestive health center will also house a nurse’s station, two full locker rooms with showers and a break room. The digestive health center has separate corridors for the pre-procedure, surgery and recovery rooms—to create the perception of moving step-by-step through each phase of healing. This design was intentional, according to Joshua Di Napoli, manager of marketing and communications. “We want to have better patient outcomes,” he said. “And we can do that with how we design the space.”
