The added express lanes will connect to the existing express lanes on MoPac and to the 183A Toll in Cedar Park to allow for quicker access to commuters. It will allow emergency vehicles to respond in less time and allow Capital Metro buses free access. “We’re really going to give people in this part of town options, di erent ways to get where they want to go.
As construction continues on US 183 North towards completion in 2026, drivers can expect lane closures, increased construction activity on additional lanes and sidewalks, bridge widening and ramp work at the con- nection with MoPac. The construction is part of the 183 North Mobility Proj- ect, a $612 million project on a 9-mile section of US 183 between SH 45 N/RM 620 and MoPac. The project will add two new tolled express lanes and a fourth continu- ous nontolled lane in each direction. Construction will also include adding and improving sidewalks and bicycle

Round Rock ISD looking to expand open enrollment Maritza Gallaga, associate director of communications and community relations, said Round Rock ISD is examining an expansion of the district’s open enrollment program to more campuses. RRISD o cials have said higher enrollment can help boost state funding to school districts. Austin ISD superintendent search moves forward On Jan. 26, after press time, Austin ISD trustees selected a search rm to conduct the superintendent hiring process for the district. Trustees began taking steps toward nding a full-time superintendent in December. The board plans to hire a new superintendent by the summer. P ugerville ISD moving forward with 2022 bond items Preliminary work is set to begin on some of the $366 million in bond propositions P ugerville ISD voters approved in November. Work will begin in early 2023 and nish by the end of the year on ber-optic cable replacements; new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; and districtwide computer replacements.

Segura plans to advocate for increased student allotments during the Texas legislative session. “Texas ranks at the bottom when it comes to per-pupil spending,” he said. “We also know that student allotment impacts every other school district around the state, and they will all bene t by an increase. So, fundamentally, that will be [legis- lative] priority [No.] 1 to increase student allotment.” Segura said that work could mean testifying at the Legislature or work- ing with partner organizations. Stability is another point Segura said he knows the district needs improvement on in the coming months and years. He said he plans to do that by being visible.

Segura said his main focus will be on support and stability for everyone in the district. “One of the things that we’ve been talking about for quite some time now is how we need to support our educators and our sta ,” Segura said. “We’ve had challenges over the last couple of years, and we know that. We’re not where we want to be regarding teacher sta ng.” He said sta retention is a major goal of his while he is interim superintendent. “We also know that it is very expensive to live in Austin, so for us as an organization, the priority has to be moving forward with a budget that produces a competitive compensa- tion package,” Segura said. The speci c projects and cost estimates for the bond will be determined by a 15-member court-appointed Bond Advisory Committee, which will meet weekly to determine the county’s most critical needs. “Travis County’s Citizen Bond Advisory Committee is a way for the public to let us know what they would like to prioritize in the next bond package,” Travis County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ann Howard said. “Whether it is transportation, the environment, facility planning, nance or health care, community involvement will shape Travis County’s future.”

AUSTIN In 2022, Austin and Travis County targeted job vacancies by increasing their minimum wage from $15 to $20. City Manager Spencer Cronk high- lighted the sta ng shortages as the priority for the scal year 2022-23 budget, after the vacancy rate reached nearly 16% of Austin’s budgeted positions in May. Applications for open positions jumped 43.67% when the new wage went into e ect, city o cials said. Still, the overall vacancy rate remained above 16% as of early December. As of Jan. 1, the Travis County Sheri ’s O ce’s vacancy rate ranged from 18%-32% by department. Public information o cer Kristen Dark said more than 100 applicants are going through the hiring process in January.

Each Travis County commis- sioner appointed three members to the bond advisory committee on Jan. 10. Travis County Judge Andy Brown appointed the committee chair, John Langmore, who also served as chair for Travis County’s 2017 bond committee. Those members will begin meet- ing in January and serve for about
eight months. Committee members are
required to be Travis County res- idents without delinquent taxes and not employed or associated with a business that will pro t from bond projects. All committee meetings will be open to the public and held after normal business hours.
