In 2019, at least 118 Texas women died while pregnant or within one year after childbirth, leaving over 180 children without mothers. Fifty-two, or nearly half, of these deaths were caused by pregnancy- related complications. But 90% of pregnancy-related deaths that occurred in 2019 were preventable, according to a new Dec. 15 report from the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee. The committee shared 11 recommendations, led by a push to expand access to comprehensive health services during and one year after pregnancy. The report will be available to lawmakers during the 88th Texas Legislature.
