RRISD board updates out-of-district transfer policy ROUND ROCK ISD District ocials on July 26 approved revisions to board policies that allow out-of-district BY BROOKE SJOBERG POLICY CHANGES The RRISD board of trustees approved several changes to bring its transfer policy in line with recent action to allow out-of-district transfers to enroll at select district campuses. Changes include:

students to enroll at select campuses. Trustees voted 3-1 on the decision, with the lone “no” vote from Place 7 Trustee Danielle Weston, who reiterated her opposition to allowing out-of-district students to enroll in RRISD rather than attempt to bring back families that left the district. “I don’t believe in addressing any problems with external solutions unless and until we’ve exhausted all internal solutions and explored them,” she said. Revisions to interdistrict transfer policies include the removal of lan- guage barring students who attend RRISD schools but do not reside in the district from participating in athletic activities. Previously, the policy made interdistrict transfer students ineligible to participate in varsity sports for one year. Language regarding transportation

policy for transfer students was also added to the existing policy. Specically, the district will not accept responsibility for transporting transfer students to and from school unless required to do so by legal and administrative regulations. The policy revisions also establish authority of the superintendent to accept or reject any student as long as that acceptance or rejection is

made without regard to any pro- tected class such as race, religion, color, sex or disability. A section regarding who qualies for an interdistrict transfer was also adjusted to allow children from other districts to enroll at certain campuses based on capacity. Previously, inter- district transfers were only allowed 60 days prior to a student establish- ing a residence within the district.
