Commissioners approve pay raises for employees Tarrant County Commissioners approved salary increases and merit raises for elected officials and county employees during their Aug. 1 meeting. The changes passed 3-0 with Commissioners Manny Ramirez and Gary Fickes along with County Judge Tim O’Hare voting in favor of the change. Commissioners Alisa Simmons and Roy Charles Brooks were not present at the meeting. What you need to know Elected officials will receive a 3% raise. O’Hare will make about $218,252, up from his current salary of $211,895. The four commissioners will each make $207,952, an increase of $6,057. What’s next The merit-based raises will be awarded Jan. 1 to full-time employees who were hired prior to Aug. 1, according to county documents.
Smith resigns from board of trustees Place 5 Trustee Hannah Smith resigned from her position nine months before her term was set to finish. Her resignation was approved during a meeting Aug. 21. What’s happening? Smith, who has served as a trustee since May 2021, received a new job outside of the Southlake area, according to an email sent by the Carroll ISD board President Cam Bryan on Aug. 11. Her resignation was made official Aug. 15. What’s next? The board decided to leave the position vacant until May 2024, bringing the number of trustees down to six. The board has previously operated with a vacant position, so this is not unfamiliar territory, Bryan said.
New trash and recycling service provider selected Community Waste Disposal will be the new trash and recycling provider after Southlake City Council approved a contract Aug. 1. What’s happening? Southlake will transition from Republic Services to Community Waste Disposal. The new five-year contract takes effect Oct. 1. Residents will see a $0.50 rate increase, which reflects the rising cost of collection. Most service rates for commercial clients will either remain unchanged or slightly decrease, according to city officials. The scope of services includes manual trash col- lection twice a week; weekly recycling; unbundled brush collection; and bulk collection twice a week. How we got here Republic Services notified city staff in March they would not be seeking a contract renewal.
Strawn serving as city’s acting CFO Acting chief financial officer Jeff Strawn led Grapevine through its budget process, which ended on Sept. 5, city officials said. After the departure of former CFO Greg Jordan, the city proceeded with Strawn as the acting head of the city’s finance department. City Manager Bruno Rumbelow said the interim status is likely to last up to a few months, during which he can assess Strawn’s handling of the role. Current situation Strawn has been employed with the city for the past eight years, he said. Prior to working with the city of Grapevine, Strawn spent 32 years working in various finance positions for Verizon before two years with the city of Fort Worth, including one year as its budget director.
Pay hikes coming Tarrant County approved a pay raise that will be given to all full-time employees on Oct. 1.
What’s New The contract with Community Waste Disposal and the city of Southlake will start Oct. 1. There will be some changes and additions for residents.

The big picture
In addition to Meow Wolf, the mall also oers destinations such as Legoland Discovery Center, Sea Life Grapevine Aquarium, and Round1 Bowling and Entertainment. Meanwhile, the city is host to resort attractions such as Great Wolf Lodge and Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. It will soon boast Stand Rock Resort and Water Park which is slated to come to Grapevine, with a planned opening in 2026. Foot trac inside Grapevine Mills jumped up to its busiest level this year after Meow Wolf opened, according to data from Placer.ai, a company that tracks consumer foot trac for retail and real estate companies using mobile device data. “We have very deliberate and purposeful leasing,” said Trudy Creswell, director of Marketing and Business Development for Simon Property Group. “We look for what the community wants and what is the best mix so we have a variety.”

Meow Wolf is an example of how Grapevine Mills has evolved over the past 25 years because mall ocials listen to what the shopper wants, said Trudy Creswell. From left: Heidi Berlin, Jeremy Berlin, Burak Ozcan and Stephanie Ozcan operate Ferah Tex-Med.
The backstory Ozcan worked with Southwestern cuisines when he moved to Dallas. Mixing traditional Mediterra- nean food with a Texas twist, he created what he called “Tex-Med.” Berlin became a fan of the cuisine that Ozcan created in the kitchen. The details There are staples such as hummus and shish kebabs, and falafel, gyro tacos and charred salsa with pita bread are also on the menu. “One thing that I think is really great is we have a variety of American food, and we have more traditional Mediterranean dishes,” Stephanie said.
Ozcan moved to the Dallas area in 2009. The native of Turkey worked under chef
Stephan Pyles, who had a show on PBS, when he arrived to the United States. Then, Ozcan took his culinary trades to various hotels in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and met Jeremy Berlin. The latter was a general manager of a hotel chain, and the friend- ship formed turned into a business partnership. Ferah Tex-Med opened in Garland in 2019 with Ozcan and his wife, Stephanie Ozcan, and Berlin and his wife, Heidi Berlin, joining together. A second location opened in Southlake in 2022, and they celebrated its rst anniversary in July.

The Gatehouse helps single moms with program oerings As soon as single mothers step through the gates of The Gatehouse in Grapevine, their family is given a place to call home, Program Director Chelsea Hinman said. The Gatehouse, a 501(c)(3) nonprot, was started in 2015 with the goal of helping single moms become self-sucient. The organization supports moms by providing them with a rent-free apartment and child care while they complete either the career track or the education track. The background The career track was the only program oered before an education track was added in March. Hinman said they noticed a desire among mothers applying for the program to go to school. “It wasn’t so much, ‘I need to get back on my feet in a career’; it was, ‘my career was furloughed as a result of COVID[-19], or my paycheck is no longer aording what I need, so I’m needing to go back to school to increase my earning potential,’” Hinman said. While in the career track, single mothers work full time while building stability and the skills needed to keep supporting themselves after the program ends, according to the program details. The education track is for moms with two or less years left in an undergraduate or master’s degree program at a campus located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Mothers attend college as full-time students and receive a monthly stipend to pur- chase food and other necessities so they can focus on being a student.
