Children’s Health nutrition specialist talks healthy resolutions As families settle into the new year, parents may be thinking about new goals for their children, such as eating healthier and being more active. Gabbie Ricky, a performance nutrition specialist at Children’s Health Andrews Institute in Plano, oered some advice about how parents can set healthy goals and encourage their kids. Answers have been edited for clarity, style and length. What are some examples of a healthy resolution? Eat more home-cooked meals and be more active. Make resolutions that involve what you can add to your routine versus what you’re limiting or restricting. A lot of people try to make healthy resolutions the other way. They’re like, “I’m going to limit this, restrict that.” But even that little
Roadway construction planned for Prosper Construction on an extension of Prosper’s Legacy Drive is expected to break ground in spring 2024. The project will include creating a four-lane road to extend Legacy Drive from Prairie Drive to First Street, according to the town of Prosper capital improvements dashboard. The details Construction will include building a concrete roadway with curb and gutter, various under- ground drainage improvements and median landscape improvements, according to the project dashboard. The extension is currently in its bidding phase with roadwork expected to begin in May 2024. In total, the roadwork costs $11.43 million from the town of Prosper and should be completed by early summer 2025, according to the project dashboard.
Celina roadways to receive new asphalt Some sections of asphalt on CR 90, CR 97 and CR 100 will be replaced in 2024, according to the city of Celina’s capital improvement projects dashboard. The project will focus on the following street segments: • CR 90 from CR 92 to County Road 98 • CR 97 from FM 455 to CR 134 • CR 100 from Preston Road to CR 97 The breakdown The project is currently in its design phase, according to the project dashboard. It is expected to wrap up in early March 2024 with construction spanning from August 2024-August 2025.
reframe, that mindset shift of “OK, I’m going to do more of this, more of that” is really helpful. Think about what you can do more of that will contribute to your health, such as eating more home-cooked meals, being more active, and then get specic. How can parents support their kids in eating healthier? Get specic in what changes you actually want to implement in the household and as a family, but also make sure that the kids are involved in setting the goals and coming up with clear guidelines of what these goals are and what the resolution is. Another thing is, parents should really try to model healthy eating habits themselves. Kids are extremely observant. How can parents encourage their kids to be physically active? Talk to them, see if there are sports that they like and enjoy. If they’re not sure, be open to them trying out new things. Talk to them about trying new things. It’s as simple as their friend enrolled in this sport, so they’re going to try it with them. Encourage them to try new things that they enjoy.

Expanding Prosper's parks
BY ALEX REECE
Sorting out details
The bi picture
Raymond Community Park, named for former Parks Director Dudley Raymond, will be on Prosper’s east side. Prosper’s population has more than doubled in the last decade, town Communications Manager Todd Rice said. In that time, the west side of Prosper saw a majority of the new development as the town grew, he said. “Raymond Community Park is really going to oer something to those east of Preston [Road],” Rice said. In addition to the pickleball courts, the park will bring Prosper four new lighted baseball elds, according to planning documents. It will also feature a demonstration garden, which will be for botanical education. The project’s namesake was Prosper’s parks and recreation director before Baker. In October 2021, Raymond died of complications related to COVID-19 and would be honored by town ocials’ decision to name a park for him, his wife, Bridget Raymond, said. “I really, really am looking forward to enjoying it and taking my grandchildren there,” she said.
Prosper’s biggest parks Raymond Community Park will be Prosper’s third- largest park behind Frontier Park at 80 acres and the Doe Branch Creek property’s 162 acres.
Construction began on Raymond Community Park shortly after the new year, and with it, Prosper residents will see a new wave of community park amenities. The early phases of construction were delayed slightly due to rain but ocially began the second week of January, Parks and Recreation Director Dan Baker said in an email. “You’ll see heavy equipment out there [from early January] for the next … ve months, six months,” said Kurt Beilharz, project manager and assistant director for Prosper’s parks department. The design phase began shortly after the park’s approval and took about 18 months, Beilharz said. Construction was then split between two bid packages to allow crews break ground as soon as possible, Baker said. The $19 million park is expected to be the town’s third largest at just over 67 acres once built, Beilharz said. It is also expected to bring highly requested athletic spaces to the community, Beilharz said. “We’ll have pickleball courts, which is very, very important because our residents have told us they want [those],” he said. “We’re trying to get them as quickly as we can.”

The park’s incoming athletic spaces will benet the community as the town grows, said James McKeehan, president of the Prosper Baseball and Softball Association. The association is one of many local groups using Prosper parks and schools for their teams to play and practice, he said. Lakewood Park is also expected to open in 2025, Baker said in an email. Projects like that are part of a greater plan to develop Prosper’s parks. The land at Doe Branch Creek oers hike and bike trails but will be further developed, Baker said.
Raymond Community Park construction is slated to take 15 months, Beilharz said.
“I know Dudley was very, very passionate about parks,
It is expected to be done by the time the parks and recreation open space master plan is updated—a process that will take more than a year—for the rst time since 2015. Other amenities for Raymond Community Park could be added in future phases after the park opens in summer 2025. These amenities could include tennis courts, which were cut due to cost, Baker said. Construction on park amenities is expected to start “going vertical” in late summer 2024, Baker said in an email. More information on what will be included should be announced in March once the park’s second bid package opens, Baker said. “[Raymond Community Park] should be a gem in our park system,” he said.

Major grocers to bring revenue influx to Prosper
“The increase will allow council to dedicate additional funds to community and public services, infrastructure projects, maintenance, and staff,” said Mary Ann Moon, Prosper Economic Development Corporation executive director, in an email. The breakdown Construction will start in March for Prosper’s Costco, which is expected to be completed later this year, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Ground has not yet been broken for H-E-B, but it is expected to open in 2025. With planning and adherence to devel- opment standards, additional tax collection will ensure proper growth. Moon said the town looks to sustainable growth that reflects its vision. “We must stay ahead of the increasing need for services, safety and maintaining a busi- ness-friendly environment,” she said. “Our region is experiencing exponential growth.” The background The EDC also looks at small businesses in the downtown development on top of growth at The

Gates of Prosper, Moon said. “The Gates of Prosper has added several ameni- ties—La Madeleine, Rally House, Fish City Grill, a bank is under construction—and there are plans for an expansion of dining and entertainment options west of Target,” she said. Looking ahead The EDC continues to work with other compa- nies, but more information can’t be shared at this time, Moon said.
Prosper has seen several corporate grocery stores announce new locations coming to the area. This includes the October opening of Target as well as the announcement of H-E-B and Costco coming to Prosper. With these new major grocers coming to the area, officials expect these busi- nesses will increase revenue that will go to the town. A Costco is also slated to open on Preston Road in Celina later this year.

Terramania owner brings earthy decor to Celina Traci Miller, owner of Terramania, said the name of her shop means “crazy about things from the earth.” and friend. “She just had that touch; you fell in love with her style,” she said.
Traci Miller opened Terramania in 2022.
Miller suggests patrons buy one big item that makes “more of a statement,” a philosophy she brings into Terramania. When Miller decided to open a business, she rst started doing home shows and pop ups at Adriatica in McKinney and Celina’s Friday Night Market, where she fell in love with Celina. She opened Terramania in June 2022. In addition Miller actually started her business in her kitchen with Terramania’s botanical bar, which is now the centerpiece of the store.
Terramania oers home decor with Scandina- vian inuences. Miller said she nds her mer- chandise—candles, pillows, rugs and more—from several North Texas markets. She also works with several vendors that bring items from overseas. “I wanted people to feel like they were walking into my home,” Miller said. “So all the earthy tones, the layering, the textures—it just gives you that cozy, warm feeling.” The backstory Miller said she rened her sense of style after working for Marcie Henehan, her mentor
