Owner Julie Afsahi opened the studio in 2018. The new space is part of a mixed-use development comprising four tenant suites on the ground level and two apartments on the second oor. In addition to o ering in-person yoga classes, Afsahi holds training courses for aspiring yoga instructors. She said the studio gained a following regionally and online, where she teaches several international instructors.

TRANSPORTATION UPDATES On-demand mobility transit program brings new option to residents Round Rock residents can go almost anywhere in the city for $4 with the launch of the city’s on-demand mobility service Round Rock Rides announced June 26. The big picture: City officials approved the $6.25 million contract with Austin-based zTrip in March, replacing its previous curb-to-curb paratransit services. While all riders are able to use the service, only paratransit riders will receive curb-to-curb service. All other riders will be able to use the point-to-point service, which operates similarly to bus stops using designated system pickup and drop-off spots. The city will continue to offer bus service through its partnership with CapMetro, and route changes implemented in January will remain. HEAT-RELATED CALLS ON THE RISE
The number of heat-related 911 calls Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services has responded to has increased consistently over the past three years. Williamson County Emergency Medical Services also responded to more heat-related calls this June versus June 2022.
Record-breaking heat has taken over Central Texas this summer, and weather experts predict this will continue through at least September. As a result, officials are offering to help residents beat the heat. The National Weather Service issued the first heat advisory of the year for Central Texas on June 13, and the area has been under a heat advi- sory most days since then. The region reached a record heat index value of 118 degrees June 21, and experts suggested the future will be filled with an increasing number of heat waves, according to the NWS. John Moore, a meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmo- spheric Administration, confirmed Central Texas has a 50%-60% proba- bility of experiencing above-average temperatures well into September. Mike Knipstein, Williamson County Emergency Medical Services director, also confirmed the hotter-than-nor- mal temperatures in Central Texas. BY AMANDA CUTSHALL & CHLOE YOUNG
“It looks like July is going to be our record-breaking [month] related to heat emergencies,” said Knipstein, explaining Williamson County EMS had responded to 33 heat-related calls as of July 18 and was on track to receive 55-60 calls by the end of the month. In June, Williamson County EMS set a record of 49 heat-related calls, a 25% increase from June 2022, he said. The county’s record for the most heat-related 911 calls was last set with 49 calls in July 2022. Knipstein said the county has also seen an increase in heat stroke calls, responding to five heat stroke-re- lated emergencies in July 2022 and four in June 2023. Anna Madrigal, program manager for Family Eldercare—an organiza- tion that gives free fans to those in need—said nearly 5,000 fans had been distributed this year as of July 21, assisting nearly 200 families in Williamson County. The organiza- tion distributed 7,200 fans in 2022.

New H E B with BBQ restaurant to open fall 2024 in eastern P ugerville
The H E B Grocery Co. announced construction has begun on a new store in P ugerville. What’s happening? The announce- ment came July 12 during an invite-only groundbreaking event at 2641 E. P ugerville Parkway, where the 127,000-square-foot store will be located, across from the Baylor Scott & White hospital. Zooming in: The company did not specify cost, but in March, H E B led a pair of construction permits with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation indicating a total investment of $48 million. H E B Public A airs manager Johnny Mojica said the company plans to hire more than 500 employ- ees at the new store, which will become the third and largest with a P ugerville address.
The breakdown: The release states the new H E B will come with several features and amenities, including a True Texas BBQ restaurant. Also of note: During the ground- breaking, H E B ocials made dona- tions to several local organizations. Switch data center completion expected in mid-summer 2024 All site work for the Switch data center under construction adjacent to the Dell Technologies campus is planned for completion next summer. In a nutshell: Bradley Dushkin, Round Rock’s assistant director of planning and development, said construction crews began work in March 2022 on the site for the future Switch data center, which is expected to be occupied by the end of 2024. The backstory: Switch is a high-performance computing technology infrastructure com- pany based out of Las Vegas, and its Tier 5 data center in Round Rock will constitute the company’s fth campus, called The Rock. Once complete, The Rock will be part of a large ecosystem of Switch campuses in Texas that will total more than 2 million square feet and 185 megawatts of power, according to informa- tion from the company.
Gattis School Road property redevelopment approved The redevelopment of a residential property at 201 Gattis School Road, Round Rock, will see a former residential property become a mixed-use development following approval from city o cials. What happened? City Council approved the rezoning of the 0.91-acre property July 13 at the request of developer Ravi Ka ey, who seeks to redevelop the property. Timelines are not yet available, and it is unclear what kind of development it will be. The takeaway : The property is adjacent to a two-story apartment complex to the west with single-family homes to the east, said Brad Wiseman, Round Rock’s planning and development services director.

Improvements to multiple city amenities receive cash funding BY BROOKE SJOBERG
CASH FUNDING FOR PARKS AND SAFETY On July 13, Round Rock officials voted to fund planning, and in some cases construction, on several projects, including some approved by voters through a $274 million bond in the May election.

What happened: Round Rock voters passed the largest bond in the city’s history in May. The $274 million bond package is split between two propositions. Proposition A desig- nates $230 million to improve city amenities such as parks, facilities and trails, and Proposition B designates $44 million to the city’s Public Safety Training Center and two new fire stations. Most of the projects listed within the first round of funding approved in July come from the May bond. What’s next: The projects will be cash funded, and the city will be reimbursed once the bonds for them are issued. City officials previously stated sev- eral of the projects in the May bond election have already been designed and are ready to move forward with construction. Many projects listed
ROUND ROCK Several multimillion-dollar projects to improve the city of Round Rock received cash funding in July. The projects range from some public safety improvements and the expansion of city facilities to the creation of a new downtown park with funds planned to be spent over the next 12-24 months, city staff said. City Council voted July 13 to allocate $84.3 million for projects included in the May 2023 bond as well as additional projects not funded with voter-approved money. Drilling down: Some key projects council approved include $11 million for an expansion of the Round Rock Sports Center, $20 million for the construction of three fire stations and $10 million for improvements to Harrell Parkway.

Land acquired for road improvements ROUND ROCK Several improve- ments are on the way for CR 112 and Joe DiMaggio Boulevard in Round Rock after recent city purchases of rights of way. What happened: City officials approved purchases June 22 for 4.15 acres near CR 112 and 1.23 acres near Joe DiMaggio Boulevard, totaling $1.63 million and $831,761, respectively. City staff said the money will fund improvements to both roadways. What’s next: Gary Hudder, Round Rock Transportation Department director, said the CR 112 improve- ments will help address congestion in the area, although specifications for the project have not yet been shared. The why: The burn ban comes amid severe drought conditions, low humidity levels, daytime temperatures above 100 degrees and high winds in the county, Williamson County Fire Marshal Hank Jones said. Jones said the risk of wildfires has escalated quickly within the past week as the county’s average drought index rose from 556 on July 10 to 634 on July 18. Burn bans are generally issued when drought index levels reach 600 or greater, Jones said.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY Officials initiated a burn ban for unincorporated areas July 18 as high temperatures and dry conditions have led to an increased risk of wildfires. Drilling down: The Williamson County burn ban will end Oct. 16, but County Judge Bill Gravell may lift it earlier if conditions improve. The ban prohibits burning household yard waste, such as leaves, brush and grass.
