I was asked the other day if there will be a recession beginning later this year or next. My reply was that, indeed, economic data both domestically and especially globally has been soft recently, but central banks around the world will continue to “address” these issues with easy monetary policies. In the U.S. the current expansion would appear to be long in the tooth, to say the least, as it has lasted more than twice the typical expansion cycle. But, what has been different about this expansion is that growth has been muted and it has been accompanied by very little inflation. These factors would seem to account for the length of this particular cycle. Yes, we will have another recession at some point, but don’t let that disrupt your investment plan. Trying to time economic cycles can be detrimental to your long term investment success. WORTHWHILE CONVERSATIONS AFTER MEETING THE “TERMINATOR”…

“THE TERMINATOR”??? From the movie…, but we mean those corporate restructurings where long-tenured employees lose their jobs earlier than expected. If this is you, you suddenly face important financial decisions with lifelong implications. Perhaps a severance package sweetens the deal, but not always. WHAT ARE THESE IMPORTANT FINANCIAL DECISIONS? For most people, it is preserving your lifestyle. Preserving health benefits is critical. You may face decisions related to your 401(k) balance. If you have a pension, there may be elections. These decisions create interplay with other personal financial planning objectives and need context. Is your spouse employed with a menu of available employee benefits? Are you eligible to claim Social Security benefits – because, if so, meaningful dollars are on the line in coordinating your decisions with your Social Security. Pension elections are especially complicated because of life expectancy and other unique financial considerations. Even “simple” decisions – rolling over a 401(k) – can require sophisticated analysis if you have company stock as part of your account balance. SO, HAVE YOU SEEN PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES? In 48 years, there’s little we’ve not seen. Ryan Patterson, CFA, CFP ® is our Chief

Investment Officer and oversees our Investment Committee, which includes attorneys, CPAs, and other credentialed professionals. He commented recently, “In reviewing a new client’s information, we often see prior decisions that were not well analyzed. Last year, we met with a retired employee of a major energy company who rolled their entire 401(k) balance to an IRA, missing the opportunity to extract the company stock portion tax-free under the ‘NUA Rules.’” We’ve seen people advised to roll over their 401(k) balance when it made more sense to keep the funds in the company 401(k) plan. That advice is generally from salespeople motivated by incentives to sell financial products. IS THERE A BOTTOM LINE FOR PEOPLE AFTER ENCOUNTERING THE “TERMINATOR”? Our best advice: make certain that you secure your advice from a true fiduciary. Imagine the confidence in using a firm that acknowledges its accountability to put your best interest first in 100% of their advice to you. Our team is ready to provide the client-centered fiduciary advice you expect, right here in The Woodlands. For more information, or a copy of our Form ADV, Part II, with all of our disclosures, call Craig Ivy or Larry Napier at 281 841 0707, or visit www.linscomb-williams.com.

J. Harold Williams, CPA/PFS, CFP ® , highlights the many reasons having client-centered fiduciary advice is essential to long-term success with Lauren Rich, CFP ® .

HOW ITWORKS Distracted driving still an issue in Texas Although state law prohibits texting while driving, according to the Texas Department of Transportation 1-in-5 traffic accidents in the state involve distracted driving. In effect since 2017, the lawmay contribute to the 6%decrease in crashes involving distracted driving in the past two years, according to TxDOT. TxDOT has two campaign—“Head’s Up, Texas” and the #EndTheStreakTX initiative—to help educate Texas drivers about the law and remind themof the dangers of distracted driving began this summer. The goal is to eliminate deadly accidents on Texas highways. There has been at least one traffic- related death in Texas every day since Nov. 8, 2000. The campaigns asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak. “Our message is no longer just a public safety suggestion to urge Texans to avoid distraction while operating a vehicle; it is to remind themof the law that now forbids such activity, TxDOT Executive Director James Bass said in release. “One life lost is one toomany and distracted driving is completely preventable.”
