H-GAC considers future of Pearland’s public transportation

Public transit survey results In 2022, H-GAC surveyed residents on their opinion of introducing more public transportation options into the community.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council is con- sidering new public transportation options for Pearland and is asking for input from residents. From March 19-21, the H-GAC held two in-per- son and one online public meeting for residents to provide feedback on public transportation in the city. From 2000 to 2020, U.S. Census data shows Pearland’s population more than tripled, prompt- ing the city to consider bolstering its public transportation offerings. During the meetings, participants were shown a presentation highlighting community feedback on desired public transit infrastructure. According to a 2022 survey shown in the presen- tation, the majority of respondents in Pearland said they would support the city implementing a public transit service, especially for senior citizens. Diving in deeper The presentation also showed Pearland has a

sizable commuter outflow, with more than 71,000 residents commuting daily outside the city. In the past, Pearland has considered transit services between Hwy. 288 and the Texas Medical Center in Houston—the top destination for those commuting outside the city’s limits—according to the presentation. The presentation detailed several different kinds of public transportation options, including: • Commuter transit • Park and ride • Microtransit • Ride hailing One more thing Pearland residents can send comments and inquiries to H-GAC Project Manager Alan Rodenstein at alan.rodenstein@h-gac.com. A final report and presentation will be given later this year.
