Standardized test passage rates declined among grades 3-8 year over year at Conroe ISD, according to the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness results released June 14. Both statewide and CISD scores did not see much improvement in the rates of students approaching grade level—which is considered passing—in read- ing and math between the spring 2023 and spring 2024 administrations of the STAAR test. In case you missed it The STAAR was redesigned in 2023, and new changes were implemented in

in math, but in 2024 that number dropped to 49%. Seventh grade was also the grade level that saw the steepest drop in both math and reading scores statewide from 2023 to 2024. “Math [is] where we’ve seen a lot of gaps as we look at students from those COVID[-19] years,” CISD Deputy Superintendent Bethany Medford said at an Aug. 6 board of trustees workshop. compared to its peer schools, which includes Cypress-Fair- banks, Humble, Katy and Klein ISDs. She said the seventh-grade math decrease can be attributed in part to the district’s advanced math students skipping the seventh-grade test because the curriculum is compacted for the accelerated math track. peer districts, many students skip the eighth-grade test rather than the seventh-grade test, Medford said. Among other trends in the spring 2024 tests conducted in English: • CISD students saw at least a 2 percentage point decline in math passage rates among grades 3-8. • Fourth grade is the only CISD class that improved reading passage rates, which went up by 2 percentage points. • In high school end-of-course exams for algebra 1 and biology, CISD students improved passage rates by 1 percentage point.

Statewide, students are still struggling with math scores, and the decrease in math pro‘ciency can be attributed to learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the June 14 TEA news release.
