Surges in semaglutide
Houston-area demand for drugs to treat diabetes, obesity soars
BY EMILY LINCKE & JESSICA SHORTEN
Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are some examples of Glucagon-like peptide 1 drugs, which can be prescribed to treat Type 2 Diabetes or obesity and have exploded in popularity, according to Houston-area doctors and pharmacists. However, a request by Ozempic manufacturer Novo Nordisk to restrict the compounding of semaglutides—a type of GLP-1—could limit availability. “Patented semaglutide is more expen- sive than compounded medication, and so many patients may nd themselves no longer able to aord [it],” said Dr. Deborah Horn, UTHealth Houston obesity medicine director. Meanwhile, Houston-area clinicians say the popularity of GLP-1 drugs creates challenges for weight loss treatment. “There are a lot of people who come in who have purchased semaglutides through online providers, and you just don’t know ... if they are pharmaceutical grade,” said Shifa Allana, clinic admin- istrator at Gameday Men’s Health on Gosling Road.
Warren Rose, a clinician at Gameday Men’s Health on Gosling Road, prepares a treatment for a patient. Among its services, the business specializes in semaglutide and tirzepatide treatments, which Houston-area physicians said are growing in demand.

TOWNSHIP Talk FROM THE BOARDROOM The Woodlands Township Board of Directors held their last regular meeting of the year on December 4, 2024, addressing key initiatives and community updates. Several significant items were approved, reflecting the Board’s commitment to maintaining and improving community services. Economic development took center stage as the Board accepted the annual report from The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership (EDP). Outgoing CEO Gil Staley highlighted job growth and successful business recruitment before announcing his successor, Jevon Gibb. The Board approved the 2025 service agreement with the EDP to continue driving economic growth. Amendments to park user fees and recreation facility hours were adopted following a public hearing. The Board also cast votes for appraisal district board elections and extended agreements with lobbying firms to support legislative priorities. Appointments were made to key committees, including the Development Standards Committee, Audit Committee and the One Water Task Force. Terms for the Ad Hoc Economic Development and Government Relations Committees were extended, and the 2025 meeting schedule was approved. Updates from the Development Standards Committee and the Village Presidents’ Council highlighted efforts to maintain high community standards and address resident needs. Routine items, including annual service agreements with local organizations, were also approved as part of the Consent Agenda. Board meetings are typically scheduled on the third Thursday and fourth Wednesday of each month. Residents are encouraged to attend meetings and provide public comments. Meetings are streamed live on the Township website and a meeting recap, The Boardroom Briefing , is emailed one to two business days after each meeting. The Board is planning to hold a strategic planning workshop during the first quarter of 2025.
JANUARY 2025 - INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE WOODLANDS TOWNSHIP
NEW PERMIT FEES The Woodlands Township has implemented a fee structure for specific permit types. The new system features two tiers: base services, such as fence or tree removal permits, and enhanced services, such as pool or patio permits.
Base services, which cover routine permits requiring minimal resources, will remain free to ensure accessibility for residents engaging in standard activities. This approach reflects the Township’s dedication to providing essential services without imposing additional financial burdens. Enhanced services—involving complex reviews, specialized consultations, or extensive administrative processes—will incur fees to recover the resources needed for these tasks. Community members can apply for permits on the Township’s website using the Civic Access Portal.
Since 1977, The Woodlands has shared over 1.5 million tree seedlings with residents, connecting the community to nature and nurturing a greener future. This year, join one of our longest-standing traditions by planting trees that will shade and inspire for generations. On Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9 a.m. to noon at Rob Fleming Park , residents can pick up one or more of 12 featured native tree seedlings. AIRIA curates best in texas homebuilder lineup for colton
Houston, TX – Embraced by the aromatic forest beneath the blanket of bright Texas stars, COLTON™ is emerging from 5,700 acres in Montgomery County, TX. A place where new generations of Texans will set down their roots and pursue their opportunities. Big, like the state itself, this community is built on grit, pride, and those familiar - yet unmistakable details found in every corner of this state. Whether you were born here or made your way as fast as you could, your piece of Texas is waiting for you. This homebuilder ensemble for Phase 1 of COLTON has been proudly sourced and hand-selected to design homes that are architecturally inspired by the unique character of Texas: Beazer Homes, Coventry Homes, David Weekley Homes, Drees Homes, Fedrick Harris Estate Homes, Highland Homes, J. Patrick Homes, Partners in Building, Perry Homes, Village Builders, and Westin Homes.
With over 186 acres of dedicated green space in Phase 1, you'll wear out the soles of your shoes on miles of 10-foot hike and bike trails with interconnected walking paths – or to the rhythm echoing off the wood floors of the event hall at the community's first amenity center. This 8-acre complex will feature an on-site lifestyle team, playground, splash pad, park and picnic areas, 24/7 gym, outdoor amphitheater and a whole lot more. “We are excited to see the COLTON project set a high standard for quality, well-managed growth, and smart, sustainable development in our area. AIRIA's reputation for excellence gives us great confi - dence that COLTON will bring valuable businesses and services to Todd Mission,” said Neal Wendele, City Manager for the City of Todd Mission. “We look forward to the positive impact this project will have on our community.”

Located about 45 miles north of downtown Houston, students living in the first phase of COLTON will attend Magnolia ISD, and the community will be designed to include proposed future on-site schools. With the improvements and expansion of SH249, residents of COLTON will have ease of access to employment and education corridors throughout Houston, The Woodlands, Conroe, College Station and beyond. Known for promoting a sense of community where residents can live, work and play, AIRIA will deliver the same heartfelt care and detail to this master-plan design for the residents of COLTON.
Construction is underway surrounding SH 249 Aggie Expressway and FM 1486, near Magnolia. This first phase will deliver approxi - mately 685 lots ranging from 45 ft. to 80 ft. wide with minimum depths starting at 125 ft. Model Homes and the first homebuyer purchase opportunities will begin in late 2024. COLTON is the third and largest community for AIRIA Development ® Company, whose other projects include award-winning develop- ments Aliana ® in Richmond, and ARTAVIA ® in the Montgomery County/Conroe, TX area. “We didn’t want just a theme for COLTON, we wanted something more. Something that grounds and ties us straight to the soul of this great state,” said Travis Stone, President of AIRIA Development Company, the developer of COLTON. “We’re creating a community that is exciting and new, yet familiar. A sense of place that is truly quintessential Texas.”

Conroe ISD considers spring break dates Conroe ISD in January asked the public for feedback on whether spring break for the 2025-26 school year should be held the week of March 9 or March 16. What to know In early 2024, the previous CISD board of trustees adopted the 2025-26 school calendar, setting spring break for the week of March 9, which differed from the week set by Lone Star College and other Texas colleges. Hedith Sauceda-Upshaw, the district’s assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, presented the board with a list of calendars for Texas universities and nearby school districts. The District Planning Committee planned to discuss the matter Jan. 15, after press time.
Conroe ISD projects on track despite delays On Dec. 17, the Conroe ISD board of trustees received updates regarding campus construction and improvements planned as part of the district’s $1.9 billion 2023 bond package as well as several from the $653.57 million 2019 bond package. What’s happening Rob Eissler Elementary School, a new elemen- tary school funded by the 2023 bond, will have a 950-student capacity and serve The Woodlands High School feeder zone. According to a presen- tation from Easy Foster, the district’s executive director of planning and construction, work is slightly behind schedule. Construction began in March and will conclude in August 2025, he said. Mittie J. Campbell Elementary School, which will also have a 950-student capacity and serve the Oak Ridge and Caney Creek high school feeder zones, is ahead of schedule, Foster said.
