WilCo leaders unveil reconstructed CR 111

TxDOT proposing improvements to I-35 The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing 13 miles of improvements along I-35 from Georgetown to Round Rock. The gist The project to improve I-35 includes adding two nontolled, high-occupancy vehi- cle—or HOV—lanes in each direction from Hwy. 29 to SH 45. The project also includes adding flyovers at I-35 and SH 45, relocating entrance and exit ramps, reconstructing several bridges and creating bypass lanes. The department is developing preliminary designs for the improvements and conduct- ing an environmental study. The project is part of the Mobility 35 Cap- ital Area program, which is a region-wide initiative by TxDOT and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Security checkpoints change at Austin airport Austin-Bergstrom International Airport officials announced changes to security checkpoints at the airport effective May 8. What you need to know Expedited screening programs Transportation Security Administration PreCheck and Clear screen- ing will only be available at Checkpoint 2 West. According to a news release, consolidating these types of screenings to one checkpoint “will stream- line and simplify the experience for all travelers.” Crew member screening and priority screening will only be offered at Checkpoint 1. Screening for passengers in need of accommodations will not be available at Checkpoint 2 East. Also of note Travelers may notice Checkpoint 3 is closed until at least 2026 because of the West Infill project.

Airport to get runway safety technology Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is one of four airports nationwide receiving new technology to reduce the risk of runway incursions, or when an aircraft crosses incorrectly on the runway. The gist Federal Aviation Administration officials announced April 15 that ABIA, Indianapolis International Airport, Nashville Interna- tional Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport will be the first to receive the Surface Awareness Initiative system. Air traffic controllers can use the system to see aircraft and other vehicles in all areas of the airport, according to a news release. FAA officials will roll out the system at the four airports by July, with other airports in line to receive it by the end of 2025.

A newly reconstructed two-lane roadway and intersection opened near SH 130 in southeast Georgetown following more than two years of construction. Also known as Westinghouse Road, Williamson County Road 111 is expected to improve safety and mobility in the area as Georgetown experiences rapid growth, county leaders said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 25. The overview Williamson County reconstructed and improved an existing roadway, transforming CR 111 into a two-lane road running from FM 1460 to SH 130 with widened shoulders and turn lanes. CR 111, CR 110 and CR 105 were realigned to come to a four-way intersection. Additionally, an extension of CR 110, from CR 111 to University Boulevard, was included in the

project, said Steven Shull, a representative with engineering firm HNTB. The $22.5 million project is funded by the county’s 2019 road bond, with $8.2 million from the city of Georgetown, which will maintain its portions of the roadway, said the county’s communications specialist Yvonne Ramirez and Precinct 3 County Commissioner Valerie Covey. Construction began in February 2022, Ramirez said. The road project includes preliminary plans to develop CR 111 and the northern portion of CR 110 into a six-lane, divided roadway, Covey said.
