Mill Street Youth Center to support New Braunfels teens
Mill Street Youth Center, which aims to offer free after-school programs and job training for New Braunfels teens, is getting ready to open. The $15 million project, led by the New Braunfels Youth Collaborative, or NBYC, will be housed in the former New Braunfels High School building, which has been renovated to serve a modern cohort of sixth- to 12th-grade students. “We are honored to be entrusted with this important historical building, and we took extra care to make sure we maintained the integrity of the facility,” said Stacey Dicke, executive director of the NBYC. The details The 27,000-square-foot facility will include a wide range of spaces designed for both recreation and skill-building, Launch Lab Director Jaime Johnson said. esports gaming room, a teaching kitchen and study rooms. The center will be open to all students regardless of their school district. Transportation from schools to the center is planned, and meals and after-school snacks will be provided. In some cases, professional instructors will be contracted to provide curric- ulum and instruction, Johnson said. Students will have access to hands-on demonstrations and academic support such as tutoring and SAT prep, Johnson said. There will also be a student-run cafe to help students build their resumes and assist in job-readiness training.
