5 Lewisville ISD schools to close ahead of 2025-26 school year

The Lewisville ISD board of trustees voted to close five elementary schools and approved various boundary adjustments starting in the 2025-26 school year. The details The board unanimously voted to close B.B. Owen, Creekside, Garden Ridge, and Highland Village elementary schools and Polser Elementary STEM Academy at a Dec. 9 meeting. The decision brought a close to discussions that took place from October through December, and is poised to save the district around $2.3 million, or about $460,000 per campus, according to district documents. The boundary adjustments and rezoning for the closed campuses will be as follows, according to the district’s plan: B.B. Owen Elementary’s 273 students will be rezoned to Ethridge, Camey, Morningside and Peters Colony elementary schools. Creekside Elementary’s closure will result in boundary adjustments for Lewisville, Lakeland and Degan Elementary schools, which will absorb Creekside’s 373 students. Garden Ridge Elementary’s closure will impact Donald Elementary STEM Academy and Forest Vista Elementary, which will absorb the campus’s 323 students. The 378 students at Highland Village Elemen- tary will be rezoned to McAuliffe Elementary and Heritage Elementary. The 504 students attending Polser Elementary STEM Academy will combine with Hebron Valley Elementary, which will become the new STEM academy.

Transfer students currently attending affected schools will be allotted a space at the school they were originally zoned for, but the district will consider further transfer requests, officials said. The board adopted a $4.51 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year 2024-25. Enrollment decline was one factor that precipitated discus- sions on school closures and prompted the board to forgo staff raises for the FY 2024-25 school. What they’re saying Garden Ridge Elementary parent Katy Natt said she would have liked to see more transparency in the decision to close schools. “Parents of the community have poured their heart and soul into giving the board food for

our students.” Going forward

The district will begin the process of transfer- ring students and staff over the next year, with changes set to take effect in the 2025-26 school year. With the closure of Polser, the district will begin the STEM Academy certification process for Hebron Valley Elementary beginning next year, officials said.

Rodriguez said that the program is condential, unless reporting is required by law, such as in the case of child or elder abuse. The program is available in both English and Spanish. Zooming in Once a referral is made, care navigators will reconnect with referred individuals about two weeks after the initial call to ensure that they were able to connect with a mental health care provider. Herrera said another follow-up with individuals takes place about three months after the call to check in on the well-being of referrals. “We are having really good feedback from the people reaching out, because they’re saying that their well-being has improved,” Herrera said.

Denton County Public Health’s free Links program, which aims to reduce barriers for Denton County residents to access mental health providers, engaged with over 400 individuals in 2024. The Denton County program launched in August 2023 in response to a United Way of Denton County survey, which found that 20% county residents experienced a mental health crisis, Healthcare Program Access Coordinator Isabel Rodriguez said. How it works Individuals can reach out to a mental health navigator during normal business hours Monday through Friday, or online any time, Rodriguez said. Navigators then connect with individuals to gure out what services are needed and what resources they can be referred to, but Denton County Public Health’s Links program is not a crisis helpline. Mental Health Navigator Rachel Herrera said individuals can provide information they choose to

Since 2017, the town of Flower Mound has added 6 miles of trails 8 feet or longer and 192 acres of parkland, Jennings said. An $80,000 expansion to Flower Mound’s Leonard & Helen Johns Community Park is currently underway. The 37-acre park, which includes 7 acres that were added in 2021, originally opened in the 1980s and is set for a refresh, Jennings said. It is along the Pink Evening Primrose Trail, which connects several parks, schools, neighborhoods and retail centers together. The park is one of 10 commu- nity parks provided by the town, which are intended to serve a 3-mile radius. A master plan is in development for Prairie Trail Park. The 4.25 acre space offers a baseball backstop, picnic tables and parking but has been underutilized in recent years, Jennings said. “We believe Prairie Trail Park has the potential to serve residents of all ages with a variety of recre- ational opportunities,” Jennings said. Since the 2019-20 fiscal year, the town has

Flower Mound budgeted parks, recreation funding The total budget increased by 50% in 2024-25. The 2019-20 budget was bigger due to major projects.

There will also be improvements to Twin Coves Park in Flower Mound. The 243-acre site on the shores of Lake Grapevine has been highly successful since it saw renovations in 2016, Jennings said. Operated under a lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Twin Coves Park features 19 fully furnished cabins, 22 RV slips, a small craft launch, a boat ramp and other amenities. He said more RV spaces, a restroom building, a camp headquarters with a store, indoor rental space and a small outdoor pavilion have all been proposed for Twin Coves Park. “These projects underscore the town’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our community through thoughtfully planned parks, trails and recreational spaces,” Jennings said.

Peters Colony Memorial Park

There are town projects on the horizon that could contribute to the health and wellness of residents, including the expansion of the town’s trail system, Chuck Jennings, Flower Mound’s director of parks and recreation, said. Flower Mound and Highland Village leaders are working to make connections to the DFW Veloweb, a trail system that runs throughout North Texas. “Trails improve opportunities for folks to expand their community and social bubble,” Phil Lozano, Highland Village’s parks and recreation director, said. In Flower Mound, construction is underway on a new 3.3-acre park—Peters Colony Memorial Park— at 3201 Peters Colony Road. The $3,360,000 park will include a pavilion, a veterans memorial area, native landscaping, trail connections and more, officials said. It will be completed in fall 2025.

Quote of note “It’s a Boston Terrier, which aren’t traditionally dogs who run,” Darren said regarding company branding. “Trail running is all-inclusive. We have hikers, slow runners and fast seasoned runners. That dog represents we’re inclusive for everyone.”

The couple became involved in a trail running community where they met Drew Flowers, who had years of experience working in specialty running stores, in 2018. In 2020, the Becks approached Flowers with their idea of opening a trail running supply store in Flower Mound.

FLOWER MOUND HIGHLAND VILLAGE ARGYLE EDITION

Health & wellness

BY JACOB VAUGHN

Q&A: Cryotherapy with Cryo Nation’s Josh Brown Josh Brown, the owner of Cryo Nation, said cryotherapy uses dry cold to reduce inammation and boost metabolic rates without freezing muscle tissue. Cryo Nation has several North Texas loca- tions, including one in Highland Village. Can you explain what cryotherapy is and how it works? Cryotherapy is a modernized version of an ice bath. Unlike ice, we’re not freezing your muscle tissue, we’re not restricting blood ow. All we’re doing is cooling o the skin surface, which allows us to get it much colder than an ice bath without it feeling much colder. The primary purpose is reducing inammation. We have people coming in for pain management, lots of dierent pain issues and weight loss. Your body thinks it’s freezing. As a byproduct, your metabolic rates kick into overdrive.

Josh Brown owns Cryo Nation, which operates several North Texas locations, including one in Highland Village.

JACOB VAUGHNCOMMUNITY IMPACT

What should people know before trying cryotherapy for the rst time?

What should people look for when choosing a cryotherapy clinic or provider? You want to make sure wherever you’re going, you’re doing true cryotherapy by scientic de- nition. You just want to make sure that the place you’re going to is reputable, that they’ve been open for a while, and that they know what they’re doing.

It’s just much easier than what people anticipate. I believe everyone’s at least a little nervous, espe- cially if they haven’t done something like ice baths or cold plunges or exposure that’s similar.
