HIGHLIGHTS ROUND ROCK ISD District officials held a virtual town hall Feb. 7 regarding the opioid fentanyl crisis to address questions and concerns from parents, as the drug poses a regional issue. The town hall event focused on fentanyl awareness, prevention and resource information from experts within the district. The drug ranks as the No. 1 cause of death among 18- to 45-year-olds, according to the Texas National Guard. A recording of the town hall is available on the district’s fentanyl awareness page. ROUND ROCK ISD On Feb. 20, the St. David’s Foundation awarded the Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Foundation $36,000 to support the district’s pre-K program, RRock Ready. New summer programs to boost support for Round Rock students
ROUND ROCK ISD District staff will receive their regular rate of pay for forced closures caused by Winter Storm Mara. All campuses in the district were closed Jan. 31-Feb. 3 as storm debris and power outages prevented stu- dents from safely attending school, according to district officials. While Forest North Elementary School still lacked power Feb. 6, all other RRISD campuses reopened that day. School board officials approved a resolution to compensate all district staff for closures resulting from bad weather but did not specify any cost to the district or needed makeup days. RRISD Superintendent Hafedh Azaiez said during a Feb. 9 board meeting the move would also allow the district to compensate staff should there be any additional bad weather days. ROUND ROCK ISD A variety of free summer school programs will be available for Round Rock ISD students who may be in need of additional educational support. New and continuing programs are included in the district’s summer programming plan. Officials said the plan meets state legislative requirements mandating additional learning pro- grams to combat COVID-19-driven learning loss. During a Feb. 16 board meeting, RRISD trustees approved summer programs for elementary, middle and high school students. Some programs are offered by invitation only, according to district documents. Officials said RRISD will provide transportation for students who live more than 2 miles from summer learning locations.
