The DFW Connector is a $370 million Texas Department of Transportation project that includes rebuilding and widening SH 121 north of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to accommodate new inter- changes at I-635 and FM 2499. Work that started in July 2018 to relieve roadway congestion that commonly occurs along 3 miles of SH 121 hit a new major milestone in January. During the rst week of the new year, crews with NorthGate Construc- tors completed a trac lane pattern switch to put drivers on new north- bound auxiliary lanes, NorthGate Public Information Assistant Maria Woodrow said. The lanes take vehicles coming from I-635 toward SH 121 and put them on SH 121 farther along the road. This is a major milestone for the project, Woodrow said. “That trac is not going on northbound [SH] 121 until later on, so it really is going to be a huge weight

At the end of February crews will continue demolition of the eastbound I-635 bridge, which began in 2019. Demolition is scheduled to take one weekend, but it might be two, Woodrow said. During that time northbound trac will be detoured to frontage roads.

in this bond program. Because of the successful technology rollout, there’s not a child in CISD that hasn’t beneted from the planning and implementation of the 2017 bond.” Grapevine-Colleyville ISD As of December 2019, GCISD has completed several anticipated bond projects, Executive Director of Communications Kristin Snively said. These include building and opening the new Cannon Elementary School; building two multipurpose activity centers; and making classroom addi- tions at Grapevine Middle School, Timberline Elementary School and Grapevine Elementary School. The district is also in the process of completing the nal two large items: adding controlled vestibules at campuses that do not have these features and renovating libraries into Learning Commons areas.
Over the summer, eight campuses received renovations. Those cam- puses were Glenhope Elementary, Grapevine Elementary, Silver Lake Elementary, O.C. Taylor Elementary, Dove Elementary, Colleyville Middle, Cross Timbers Middle and Grapevine High. These renovations included mechanical systems and kitchen equipment updates and, more sig- nicantly, building a new controlled vestibule at each of these schools, bringing in new classroom furniture, adding classrooms to Grapevine Ele- mentary and renovating the Learning Commons areas, Snively said. “The renovated learning commons will provide a exible learning space that is available to all students across all campuses,” Snively said in an email. “This will enhance their learning environment and provide additional space for learning and collaboration.”

Other projects the district tackled in 2019 involved new classroom addi- tions at Carroll Elementary, Johnson Elementary and Old Union Elemen- tary, Thannum said. These additions included safety enhancements, such as new surveillance cameras at Johnson and storm shelter areas at all three campuses. “Students at every grade level are beneting from the safety and security projects, as well as [from] the additional makerspaces and classrooms at campuses,” Thannum said in an email. “Programs like band, choir, theatre and STEM are all bene- ting from the facility improvements

Carroll ISD In December, CISD hosted a reception for attendees to sign the foundation slab for the new music center on the campus of Carroll Senior High School. This is one of the most anticipated projects from the bond package, said Julie Thannum, assistant superintendent for board and community relations. When constructed, the facility will feature practice rooms for choir, band and jazz band, Thannum said. The building will have a 700-seat

In June, WGI Parking Planners presented its ndings to the City Council, concluding much of the parking in the transit district and downtown is underutilized, according to meeting documents. WGI recommended the city add waynding signage and enhance the city’s website technology to add an interactive parking map. BY MIRANDA JAIMES
Hill said while the city has been interested in purchasing land, it has been limited in its ability to acquire more of it. The city typically uses a third-party resource to purchase land, and city sta has to return to council to negotiate back and forth, which can take place only during City Council meetings, she said. “It’s been so dicult, and we’ve lost a couple of nice pieces of prop- erty that I would have liked to have bought,” Hill said. At the Jan. 23 workshop, City Council and sta will decide how much money to ask for in a potential bond, she said. Setting the money aside would help the city move more quickly to purchase land if an opportunity were to arise, she said. The new potential open space could also be used to help the city address stormwater management problems, Hill said.
been mayor that ‘open land, passive parks’ is a priority,” Hill said. “But we all know that land in Southlake has gotten incredibly, incredibly expensive.” Passive parks are less developed than other parks; one might have a path and some benches. On Jan. 23, the city of Southlake will hold a workshop to discuss the possibility of putting the bond item on the May ballot, Hill said. The workshop will be open to the public.
This May, Southlake residents may be asked to vote on a city bond referendum. If called, this would be the rst city bond election since the ‘90s, Mayor Laura Hill said. The bond would ask voters to com- mit to setting money aside to help the city purchase land, Hill said.
