Hays jail adds on-site mental health care Hays County defendants deemed incom- petent to stand trial can soon receive mental health care in jail rather than waiting for placement at a state hospital following a program approved by commissioners Jan. 6. Why it matters In Hays County, individuals are waiting nearly 300 days to be placed for treatment, which costs the county roughly $45,000 per person, Judge Ruben Becerra said. With 24 people in Hays County Jail currently awaiting treatment, the total cost to the county is approximately $1.08 million. Looking ahead The program will be funded by a state grant, while the county will be responsible for medications. Commissioners expect to implement it within the next few months.

San Marcos to reconsider 200-acre data center San Marcos City Council is reconsidering zoning and map designation changes tied to a proposed data center that has drawn resident pushback. Council heard a presentation Dec. 16 on amending the Preferred Scenario Map for about 200 acres west of Francis Harris Lane. The latest The Planning and Zoning Commission, or PZC, recommended approval Jan. 13 to change the map designation from “Conservation/Cluster” to “Commercial/Employment Low” and rezone from “Future Development” to “Light Indus- trial.” The current designation reserves the land for future development, while the requested designation would enable the proposed data center’s development.

Council will address the requests at these upcoming council meetings: Feb. 3: Public hearing, no action will be taken Feb. 17: Public hearing, ‚rst reading March 3: Ordinance reconsideration, second and ‚nal reading What’s next?

SOURCE: CITY OF SAN MARCOSCOMMUNITY IMPACT

How we got here A similar request was denied by the PZC in March 2025, which created a condition requiring council to reach a supermajority vote of 6-1; however, council failed to meet that threshold with a 5-2 vote in August 2025. What they’re saying Residents raised livestock, water, electricity and utility-cost concerns; Highlander LLC representative John Maberry cited jobs, tax base, environmental regulations and minimal resource impacts.

Buda city ordinance sets regulations for live music Buda City Council approved a Dec. 16 ordinance amendment setting enforceable hours and decibel limits for recurring live music and streamlining permits for businesses. Some context weren’t built for nightly entertainment. The ne print

The ordinance amendment will primarily impact venues hosting full-band, ampli›ed music that will consistently exceed base ordinance noise limits. Businesses more than 300 feet from a residence that meet state limits are largely unašected. Permit fees are waived through March 2027.

Perseus Defense, a defense technology startup that specializes in guided micro-missiles for drone defense, has selected Tower Business Park in Buda as the location of its new headquarters. The new headquarters will house engineering, advanced manufacturing, research and development, and operations roles. The average annual salary is projected to reach $120,000, which is more than 126% above Hays County’s median wage, according to Buda Economic Development Corp. oƒcials. “Buda is the ideal location for our next stage of growth,” Jason Cornelius, co-founder and CEO of Perseus Defense, said in a news release. “The region’s strong workforce, proximity to major defense partners, and ’ourishing community of defense startups provide the right environment for us to scale our technology and mission.” Perseus Defense moves to Buda

One more thing

Our team is deeply grateful to the Buda EDC and the great state of Texas for helping us secure the ideal home to ramp up production and accelerate this technology in support of our troops. JASON CORNELIUS, CEO OF PERSEUS DEFENSE

Working closely with the U.S. Department of War, the Department of Homeland Security and a variety of Army research groups, Perseus Defense is required to create 130 jobs in the rst three years. The company must also maintain its Buda headquarters for a minimum of ve years, according to Buda EDC documents.

Perseus Defense is projected to establish approximately 400 jobs by its fth year at its new Buda headquarters.

Outdoor tness court breaks barriers to entry Over the summer of 2025, an outdoor tness court bringing seven movement stations and exercise guidance was installed at Lake Kyle Park. David Lopez, city of Kyle parks and recre- ation director, said Lake Kyle Fitness Court was designed to lower barriers to health and wellness for residents. “We get regular visitation throughout the day,” Lopez said. “Folks who are getting their vitamin D intake, fresh air, and they don’t have to worry about memberships. They can go whenever it’s convenient for them.” Lopez said a demonstrated appetite for tness facilities is being used to plan future park spaces in the city. He also noted that the success of the tness court may lead to the inclusion of similar spaces at these parks as planning continues.

mind-body connection for overall vitality. Scien- ti cally proven bene ts of mindfulness include signi cant reductions in anxiety and depres- sion, eective pain management, improved focus, lower blood pressure, and healthier eating habits that promote better digestion and weight management. If someone is curious about mindfulness, what’s one simple thing they can try this week, and what should they look for? Begin by paying attention to your breath when you feel stressed, agitated or restless. Notice how you are breathing; slow or fast, shallow or deep, choppy or steady? Keep watching your breath with your mind’s eye without trying to change it. You will notice it begins to slow down naturally, and you feel more relaxed.

Sari Fujimaru is a mindfulness teacher and board-certi ed coach based in the Texas Hill Country who helps clients navigate stress and life transitions through mindfulness-based coaching, meditation and holistic wellness practices. Fujimaru oered strategies for easing stress and staying grounded through change. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the conscious eort to focus on what is happening in the moment, internally and externally. It is about being fully present in the here and now. What role does it play in physical wellness? Mindfulness helps reduce stress, leading to better sleep and energy. It lowers tension by calming the nervous system and harmonizes a

perfectionism can undermine even the most healthy meal. That insight has deeply shaped how I cook for others. When people feel relaxed and connected at the table, digestion improves, satisfaction increases, and food does what it’s meant to do: it nourishes. What’s one comfort-food dish you’ve adapted over time to make it healthier, and which tweaks made the biggest dierence? Over time, I’ve learned that comfort doesn’t come from heaviness. It comes from familiarity, balance, and how a dish makes you feel afterward. The big- gest shift was moving away from excess and toward intention. Mac and cheese is a great example. I use better-quality cheese in smaller amounts, build ƒavor with roasted garlic or a touch of Dijon, and often add vegetables, fresh herbs and a crisp topping to create contrast so the dish feels complete without relying solely on cream and butter. Those changes made the biggest dierence. The dish still feels indulgent, but it supports the body.

The award-winning personal chef spoke with Community Impact to oer tips for those who want to eat healthier but aren’t sure where to start. What does a well-rounded menu look like in your kitchen, and how do you balance indulgence with wellness? A well-rounded menu has contrast and care. There’s richness balanced with brightness. There are grounding elements alongside fresh, enlivening ones. Indulgence shows up in thoughtful moments rather than excess, while wellness shows up in how the meal supports conversation, energy and presence. Through my own work with a nutritional therapist, I’ve learned that stress, speed and
