Local health care providers seek to improve access to care in Fort Bend County

BY ASIA ARMOUR & DANIEL WEEKS The latest studies of health needs in Fort Bend County identify barri- ers preventing many residents from accessing quality physical and men- tal health care, and local providers are expanding to meet the demand. Various Fort Bend County entities conducted a series of community health studies and surveyed 800 individuals throughout 2022 to form

the county’s 2022 Community Health Assessment report. The CHA report released April 21 found that access to health care needed to be improved for many res- idents in the county; survey respon- dents said the two primary barriers to accessing health care were an inabil- ity to pay for care out of pocket and a lack of health insurance.

Houston Metro Publisher

What’s your typical day as a CI Publisher? JC: It begins with reading our email newsletters, then touching base with staffers covering our Houston communities. I also like to stay close to our customers and trends in the region. Attending chamber lunches or networking is something I prioritize, and keeping on top of the operational needs and financial health of our metro fills out my week. I strive to serve my team each day based on where their needs are.

How do you spend your free time? JC: I serve on several boards within the Cy-Fair community where I grew up and where I’m raising my family. Patronizing local businesses, specifically our advertising partners, is also fulfilling to me. Aside from Community Impact, what have you read recently? JC: I just finished “The Intentional Year,” “Smart Brevity,” “The Measure,” “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” and “Intimate Allies.”

Email newsletters are booming for CI; why should readers subscribe? JC: They really are the best way to stay informed with the news of the day plus entertaining items, like new restaurants opening and events to plan your weekend.

To keep pace with growth in the area, Harris County is seeking engi- neering firms to lead a study that will explore improvements to mobility around the Westpark Tollway. The study will address a segment of the roadway from Beltway 8 west to the Harris County-Fort Bend County line, which is near Grand Parkway, according to a May 17 news release. The study aims to ultimately create more vibrant, accessible and equitable connections between communities on both sides of the thoroughfare. Study details: Per the release, community input will be central to the study, as will exploring best practices in urban design. A timeline and cost estimate have not yet been

made. Potential options include adding public art, increasing lighting, maximizing parking, and adding tollway plaza spaces to make access to the tollway safer. Why it matters: Briones described the study as an opportunity to expand transportation options for the roadway that would support economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents. “We must build with the future in mind and ensure our work is sustainable, strategic and sensible— while always keeping community engagement central,” Briones said in the release.

Harris County seniors receive higher homestead exemptions BY MELISSA ENAJE

HOW IT WORKS The following example of a homestead exemption shows how property taxes owed are calculated based on a home appraised at $300,000 with an exemption of $25,000.

HARRIS COUNTY Commissioners unanimously voted May 16 to increase the homestead exemption for seniors and disabled homeowners. The increase will go into effect for the 2023 tax year for bills that go out in October. The impact: Those who are legally defined as disabled or for those age 65 or older could qualify for an additional $25,000 off the appraised value of their homes. According to Harris Central Appraisal District documents, if residents are over 65 and disabled, they may either receive the over-65 exemption or the disability homestead exemption, but not both. • For those who meet the age or disability requirements, the $25,000 increase raises the 2022 exemption from $250,000-$275,000. • The savings for qualified persons would average $130 per year. Going forward: Reaching age 65 does not automatically exempt senior homeowners from paying property City of Katy kicks off budget season with annual finance report

Omorowa Obanor recalled a moment in her life that resonated with her long after her family moved to the U.S. from Nigeria when she was in high school. A nurse helped her through an experience in Nigeria’s health care system. Years later, Obanor is a doctor of nursing practice at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, which is part of CommonSpirit Health, a nonprot Catholic health care system. Obanor’s research in 2021 resulted in a 9.5% reduction in surgical site infection readmission at St. Luke’s. Community Impact spoke with Obanor about how her research impacts patient health. WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERI ENCE DURING THE COVID19 PANDEMIC? Initially it was overwhelming as we geared into practices that we needed to do and practices that were in place to care for our patients. We just took that in and jumped right into action, as nurses would do. After that initial concern was gone, I think communication, especially here, was very strong. We gain our condence with each day. We’re resilient.
