Term limits could be on Fort Worth May ballot During a work session Dec. 2, Fort Worth Assistant City Attorney Gavin Midgley presented options for possible changes to the city charter that could be voted on during the May 2 election. Proposed charter changes include increasing council pay to $45,000 and mayor pay to $60,000 annually, changing terms from two years to up to four years, or staggering terms so that not all 10 seats are up for election at the same time. The deadline to call an election is Feb. 13. Diving deeper During the May 2026 election, Fort Worth will have a special election to fill the council District 10 spot currently held by Alan Blaylock. He announced in October that he would run for the Texas House District 93 seat, and the election would fill his council term through 2027. The May 1, 2027, election has all 10 council

NISD school hits completion milestone A Northwest ISD elementary school scheduled to open in 2026 has reached 30% completion in construction. NISD board trustees approved an encroachment agreement with the city of Fort Worth at a Nov. 11 meeting to build and maintain a storm drain, screen wall and ornamental fence near city easements. Romer Elementary School is one of multiple voter-approved facilities under construction to meet student growth in the district. It will be located at 15201 Wagon Train Trail in Haslet.

KISD OKs new election month for trustee seats Keller ISD ocials approved moving future election dates from May to November during their Nov. 20 meeting. The change passed 4-2 from the vote, with trustee Jennifer Erickson abstaining from a vote. Trustees John Birt, Chris Coker, Charles Randklev and Heather Washington voted in support of the change while trustees Randy Campbell and Chelsea Kelly voted against the change. The gist Keller ISD board members will now seek election during the November election cycle, with the next election occurring in November 2026. This change extends current trustee terms by six months to align with the November cycle. Trustees who voted for the change said Novem- ber elections have a higher voter turnout, while those against it cited the overall increased cost and

Memory care facilities specialize in providing care to seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive issues. Staff members are trained to help residents manage these diseases. Hospice care is intended to relieve symptoms and suffering associated with a terminal illness in those who have been given six months or less to live. The patient must choose to forgo further curative treatment. Metroport Meals on Wheels brings joy to local seniors

Metroport Meals on Wheels oers a chance for individuals in need of food to connect with the volunteers who bring them warm meals. “The personal connection between the vol- unteers and the participants is huge,” Executive Director Mary King said. “The volunteers love it [and] the participants look forward to it.” Meals are dropped o to homes of individuals who cannot cook for themselves. Metroport Meals on Wheels also delivers meals to local senior living facilities, King said. The overview Metroport Meals on Wheels is located o US 377 in Roanoke and services people in northeast Tar- rant County, south Denton County and south Wise County, King said. Meals come from restaurant and grocery store partners such as Central Market in Southlake, Snooty Pig Cafe in Argyle and Dove Creek Cafe in Roanoke. Individuals or caregivers who need meals can call Metroport Meals on Wheels to see if they are eligible for hot meals delivered directly to their home ve days a week, King said. The impact Metroport Meals on Wheels volunteers don’t just assist seniors. The organization also provides meals for anyone who may not be able to make a meal for themselves. “A lot of people are never going to have the

luxury of living to be 60; they need help when they need it, not at some mystical age,” King said. “Looking at who gets meals; is it someone who can consistently cook and shop for themselves? If they cannot, that would be an eligibility factor. If they are chronically isolated, that would be an eligibility factor.” One participant of the program suered from terminal breast cancer and lived with her daughter who was single, King said. Metroport Meals on Wheels provided meals to the mother while her daughter was working, relieving some of their nancial burden. “[These] meals brought peace of mind for both as well as stress relief for [the daughter], allowing her to spend quality time with her dying mother,” King said. How to help Metroport Meals on Wheels is always looking for volunteers to deliver meals, King said. “Ideally, our volunteers drive one day a month,” King said. “That’s [around] 22 days a month that we have meals going out.” Volunteers pick up meals from Metroport Meals On Wheel’s restaurant partners and follow the route given to them to deliver the meals. Individu- als who are delivering meals must be 18 or older. “A lot of our volunteers have younger children and they’ll bring the younger children with them and that is wonderful,” King said. “The seniors

generally love it.” One way Metroport Meals on Wheels funds its program is through Sadie’s, a resale store that sells furniture, clothes, books and trinkets. Sadie’s generates funds for the program by donating all proceeds from merchandise sold to Metroport Meals on Wheels’ delivered meal programs, according to its website. The shop is located at 432 US 377 in Roanoke, next door to Metroport Meals on Wheels.

Upcoming residential development

Roanoke’s rst independent living facility, which is an $81 million project, broke ground in November and is set to open in 2027 at Oak Street and Dorman Road on more than 10 acres. City ocials approved the development, called Watermere on Oak, on April 8. Amenities like a tness center, meal options and housekeeping will be available. Residents 55 and older will have an alternative to nearby senior living facilities. Denise Lamanna, a Southlake-based Realtor who works with families transitioning to senior living, said amenities are a huge draw toward these communities. “They want activities, the availability of medical care [and] pharmaceutical care,” Lamanna said. The only other senior living facility in Roanoke is for assisted living and memory care. Integrated Real Estate Group, the development company for Watermere on Oak, will also build a 30-lot subdivision and an eight-lot subdivision by the community with no age restriction.

55+ population

Roanoke’s 55-and-older population has grown over the years, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Residents eligible to live at Watermere, or those over the age of 55, make up more than 19% of Roanoke’s overall population, according to the ve-year 2023 American Community Survey, which is used to collect demographic data on people and housing in the United States. Virginia Lowe, a senior living at the Watermere location in North Richland Hills, moved from Tennessee to be closer to family in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Lowe said she was seeking a place to spend the rest of her life when she chose her apartment. “I wanted to make my own decision. … The time was right, and I totally believe that we [seniors] know when the time is right to make our choice to move,” Lowe said.

Sprinkle said Watermere on Oak is under construction on an uneven piece of land with about 40 feet of a slope. “That’s one of our specialties; nding places where a normal developer wouldn’t even consider because of the investment that would have to go into it,” he said. The location is comparable to Watermere’s North Richland Hills location. Craig Hulse, the director of economic development at North Richland Hills, said Watermere’s construction made the area more attractive for other businesses to develop nearby. “[Watermere] took a very dicult- to-develop site and they made it attractive for stimulating development around it,” Hulse said. Sprinkle said a detention pond will be constructed to assist with controlling runo and ooding, and will eventually bring in wildlife like sh and turtles. “These ponds help reduce the immediate impact of rainfall to prevent ash ooding and damages to properties and infrastructure,” Roanoke Public Works Director Shawn Wilkinson said. Construction is expected to take two years to complete.

access plans, Josef Sprinkle with Integrated Real Estate Group said. The city of Roanoke also commissioned a study last year to assess the needs of its re department as the city grows. Economic Development Man- ager Siale Langi said the study will take new devel- opments like Watermere on Oak into account. “Fire services are involved in the plan review process to understand the number of buildings, layout of the development, building accessibility and occupancy that could assist in an emergency response,” Langi said.

While the site plan for Watermere on Oak was passed by Roanoke ocials in April, the developer and city sta are still working on an agreement about access points for emergency personnel. Roanoke Fire Chief Chris Addington asked for an access point o Lois Street when the develop- ment was approved, per previous reporting. The development currently has three access points. Addington said that without the fourth access point, the re department could face complica- tions getting to the facility, and response times might increase. There are currently no nalized
