The shop’s most popular plant is whale’s tongue agave, a large agave used for landscaping that can sur- vive in below-freezing temperatures, Matthew said. The crested Mexican fence post cactus, an indigenous plant from Mexico, is one of the rarest plants featured in the shop. “We’ve got everything from rare, unique and exclusive to starter succulents and ready-to-go arrange- ments for any occasion,” Matthew said. “We’ve got something for everybody.”

As a child, Matthew developed a love for collecting cacti, an interest he said soon became an obsession. In 2017, Matthew and his wife and co-owner, Mary Caroline Shreves, started an Instagram account under the name OG Agave, highlighting their Austin backyard’s landscaping as well as other “unique, rare and exclusive” plants they came across, Matthew said. Matthew decided to focus on the plant business full time, opening a storefront with Mary Caroline in March o RM 620. “The word of mouth and the local community support has really been outstanding,” Matthew said. “Everyone that comes in tells three or four, and then they bring in two, and it just kind of multiplies.” OG Agave oers more than 1,000 cacti, agave and succulents online and in-store, ranging from $5-$1,500.
