Urologists at Resolute Baptist Hospital began using a new technology in May that will help detect bladder cancer earlier. Dr. Ryan Donahue, a urologist at Resolute Baptist Hospital, said bladder cancer is the fth most common solid organ tumor in the population. With Blue Light Cystoscopy technology, a specialized blue light makes cancerous or abnormal cells glow bright pink. This technology will allow doctors to detect tumors 10%-40% more than they previously could, Donahue said. “I’m incredibly excited to be able to oer this in New Braunfels and our community, because I think it’s really going to make a huge impact for bladder cancer patients,” Donahue said. Donahue said doctors tend to remove all the bladder tumors they can see. However, they are “highly recurrent,” meaning another tumor may pop up three to six months later in the same spot or in a dierent area of the bladder, he explained. Doctors have wondered why another tumor presents close to where another tumor was removed, Donahue said. He said the new technology will hopefully allow doctors to see these microscopic tumors and reduce the number of recurring tumors found in follow up visits.
