menu as well. Everything is homemade and pays homage to Hernandez's heritage. She spent her childhood in South Mexico before moving to the United States when she was 11. “We grew up eating organic and cooking from scratch, so that’s how we want to cook,” Hernan- dez said. “We don’t feel like the food tastes the same when you buy it already made.” La Familia’s breakfast menu includes breakfast tacos and plates such as migas and chilaquiles. Lunch and dinner favorites include enchiladas, fajitas and mini street tacos.
Hernandez, along with her sister and brother- in-law, Bella and Randy Lopez, opened La Familia Mexican Restaurant on Austin’s southwest side in April 2007. By 2013, Hernandez became the sole owner of the restaurant. Over the years, Hernandez has worked day in and day out at the restaurant, overseeing oper- ations and checking in on customers, many of which have become regulars, she said. “I love it. At this point, they’re like my family,” Hernandez said.
