Committee eyes rental regulations

Next steps

So far this year, 120 STRs are on le with the township and have been approved through the new process, a number which is consistent with the past two years, Bredehoft said. However, sta are now looking into third-party services and partnering with Airbnb to gain a more accurate count and collect the proper taxes. There are about 35-40 potential additional residences that could be considered short-term rentals under the township’s de nition, he said. Bredehoft said one goal is to map the density of the rentals throughout the township. Township legal counsel Bret Strong said enforcement can be brought about through breach of contract, and two STR permits have been revoked because they did not abide by township regulations.

A short-term rental subcommittee formed in The Woodlands Township is tracking the number of those units in the township to ensure the rental arrangements are in compliance with policies adopted in 2019, ocials said. The subcommittee consists of two members of the Development Standards Committee, which enforces rules for property use, as well as township sta . “We are in review of what the next steps are,” DSC Chair Arthur Bredehoft said at a May 28 township board of directors meeting. He said this could include hiring a third party to conduct reviews of the township’s short- term rentals or considering changes to local rules, which consider an STR as a property rented for 30 days or less. Identifying STRs allows the township to ensure proper taxes are paid, Bredehoft said.
