“We want to be the bank where people feel valued and understood... When our customers win, we win.” DAVID BATY, PRESIDENT AND CEO
In an era where big establishments dominate the landscape, Texas Republic Bank stands out as a beacon of local ownership and community focus. With a philosophy rooted in personalized service and care, the bank has carved a unique niche in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. “I want everyone to work like they own the place,” President and CEO David Baty said. Texas Republic Bank was purchased by Baty and his group in 2011 in response to the challenges faced by the previous institution, which strug- gled under management issues. “The old board had to go home, and as we bought the bank, I was able to handpick a new board that was committed to the community and to our mission,” Baty said. One of those key figures is Tim Cantrell, the current chairman of the board, who has been instrumental since the bank's inception. “Tim was not just a successful businessman; he was a long-time cus- tomer. His success in real estate made him the perfect partner,” Baty said. The bank is governed by a diverse board of directors, representing

This commitment to customer service also extends in the bank’s approach to hiring and employee development. “We want to give young bankers the opportunity to grow within our organi- zation,” Baty said. “Promotions from within are something we celebrate, as it leads to longer-tenured employees who know our clients and can provide exceptional service.” The bank also incorporates a unique cultural element that fosters camarade- rie among employees. According to S&P Global, the bank has been ranked among the top 100 community banks five times in seven years. “That recognition isn’t just a formal- ity; it’s an objective measurement of our performance,” Baty said. What sets Texas Republic Bank apart is also the relationships it fosters with its customers. The Richardson IQ headquarters opened in 2022, and UT Dallas occupies around 13,600 square feet of the 27,000-square-foot space. UT Dallas also opened a 5G testing lab in concert with AT&T and Verizon. Joe Pancrazio, UT Dallas vice president for Research and Innovation, said the lab provides an evaluation facility for new 5G Radio Access Network products and a “wonderful opportunity” for university students. The IQ’s location is also a positive, he added. “[For vendors] to have ease of access to the facility, to be able to engage with other small businesses who might be interested in 5G or our next generation networking capacity—it just becomes a terric opportunity for the university, but also for the community,” Pancrazio said. The city’s partnership with Startup Runway will also support Richardson’s existing tech industry, Magner said. Magner said Startup Runway supports established companies looking to “expand to a new market.” He said companies could spend nine-12 months or more in the Startup Runway space before becoming independent—and he’s hoping those companies will choose to stay in Richardson.

Dallas-Fort Worth is the fastest growing met- ropolitan area in tech, according to data from the Computing Technology Industry Association. DFW added 10,691 new tech jobs in 2023, ahead of New York City’s 8,312—the second most. Richardson has seen that tech growth rsthand. Employment in tech in the city grew 97.17% from 2018 to 2023, and the IQ added around 9,500 jobs from 2014 to May 2024. Between developing the future workforce and future successful tech companies, the IQ head- quarters’ role as an incubation space could help contribute to that continued tech growth. “One of the principal benets is the opportuni- ties that students who come to our university have the chance to pursue,” Pancrazio said. “I’m excited by it. I think innovation and entrepreneurship, as it’s realized through incubator space, to be the promise of research or inspiration enabled through the kind of incubator space that we oer.” Magner added that Richardson “needs” to
Job growth in Richardson’s IQ
Pancrazio said that 65% of UT Dallas students stay in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Beyond cultivating a workforce, Magner hopes to see tangible results from the city’s partnership with Startup Runway, as well. “We’re not just saying, ‘Come to Richardson, we’ll give you the incubation space, and then you’re on your own,’” Magner said. “We’re saying, ‘Come to Richardson, we’ll give you the incubation space, and we’ll help you as you take your rst and second step in the growth of your business, in the US … hopefully that will result in some of the space that we have available throughout the city to start being occupied by these international companies.”

No. 1 Plus Chicken owner Sungrae Jeong took over as owner in September 2023.
Large portions and authentic avors are in store for diners at Richardson’s No. 1 Plus Chicken, owner Sungrae Jeong said. The backstory Jeong previously worked as a point of sale techni- cian and No. 1 Plus Chicken was one of his clients. Jeong was impressed with the restaurant and began negotiations to purchase the business from its previous owners. “I think the taste of the chicken is really good,” Jeong said. “It’s the reason I [bought] the restau- rant. It’s dierent from other restaurants.” What’s special about it? Many of the spices used to create the marinades
and avors are imported from Korea, Jeong said, giving the food an authentic avor. Additionally, Jeong said the restaurant only uses fresh chicken. According to the restaurant’s website, the chicken marinates for 48 hours and is fried twice. Wings are served with cabbage slaw and there are several house-made sauce and dry rub options available. What’s on the menu? The restaurant specializes in Korean fried chicken and other Korean fare, Jeong said. One of the most popular menu items is the green onion chicken, which features shredded green onions served over chicken nuggets and topped with a house-made green onion sauce.
